Mazda researching center cupholder clasp

Just an FYI I had a call recently asking me if I was experiencing any problems with the center console door and latch. There were a lot of other very general questions but I felt that mazda was probably interested in the center console quite a bit.. hopefully we may see a TSB on a metal clip replacement or something? :D

I've already noticed how loose the clip is and I feel like it would breal if I rested on it while it was in the 'open' position.

Funny you should mention - I had my center console lid replaced 3 months ago...and the "new" clasp is already broken!

I just got mine replaced yesterday. Not only was the black thing falling off, the plastic piece holding it snapped off. You can't put any weight on them

Mine broke twice. This last time I fabricated a metal guide to replace the plastic one that kept breaking. It's hlding up so far. A word of advice though. If yours is not broke yet, keep your elbow off it when your getting in and out of the car. It can't take much pressure. Especially if it is not closed.

The front console lid and rear cup holder are IMO the weakest components in the car. Just way too fragile.

It's not designed to open in the forward position.

I guess one of the perks of owning a white Rx8 is direct phone calls from Mazda R&D.

Me too, plus the local mechanics are on strike. Damn it's been 6-8 weeks and I have a list of 6=8 minor problems to be solved. Not looking forward to the rental vehicle!

Does anyone have a picture of what you're talking about? I don't own an 8... so I'm just curious.

I also mentioned that it was just a tad bit too shallow to close with a coke can inside :D

That, and the DSC/HUD brightness buttons were obscured by the wheel, and the hood release was way too far down under the dash/hard to reach.

The center console thing really does seem to be an issue though- has anyone considered finding a point of contact(email/snail mail) that we could all just send a note to about it?

Sorry for the quick shot, my camera seems to be having power issues.

*Note that mine is not broken at all, but it just feels like if I push on it while I'm climbing in(im 6'2 or so) it might snap. Since it's such a natural spot to lean on it can make entering the car rather awkward.

I treat both the center lid/arm rest and the sun visors with gentle tender loving care. After reading this forum, I'm so paranoid that one wrong move could cause either to break.

i had stuffed my sunglass shades box and some papers in that box and closed it and it wouldn't open it because the box caused the slider NOT to move back again. I had to break off the lid and remove the shades. Just another flaw in the design.

I haven't had any porblems with the actual push button (to open/slide the console.) but my wife leaned (not too hard) on the centre console (in the fully closed position) and did manage to pop the slider clip loose on one side.
Lucky for me it did break, it just "popped out" and I was just put it back in place and it was as good as new.

But be careful and not to put a lot of weight on it as it'll come loose/break,
