Mazda oil filters

So yeah I just bought my RX-8 two days ago. I was sitting down and they were telling me about the vehicle and told me that "I must replace the oil filter with a Mazda oil filter." Because all other oil filters leak. I'm the service manager at a Goodyear shop and this sounds like a bunch of BS to me. I've done a million oil changes and seen unfortunately seen some vehicles die in some of the most bazzar ways but never from using an after market oil filter. I've seen then get double gasketed or the wrong filter put on and cause problems never the right filter, only after market.

They also went on the tell me that they had a kid who use someother filter and blew the engine and they are NOT going to warranty it. They made it a very important fact and even gave me a paper on.

WTF, this just sounds really weird to me... what does everyone else think?

BTW, how much are the mazda oil filters going for these day from the dealer? Luck for me I get cost on all part I need to buy!!

they are BSING YOU. lol. anway, but since they are so strong on their opinion, you better stay with it, if you want your warranty. besides, Mazda oil filter is not expensive(something like 75). or you can get the MAZDASPEED oil filter.

You should bring in a sign that says Bee-S!

I haven't had any problems with the K&N oil filters I use.

I am going to look into the Hastings or Wix filters though heard a person can't go wrong with these.

They will probably tell you to never run synthetic in the rotary too. Wait let me rephrase: "We do not recommend running synthetic oil in the Renesis engine."

They didn't say anything about the synthetic oil, but I do remember asking a dealer about a year ago when I was looking at one and they said not to use it for it WOULD void warranty.

I'll see if I can find that paper, scan it, and post it here.

They cannot void your warrenty for using an aftermarket oil filter or stock style air filter, unless they are willing to provide them to you free of charge.

This type of bs is specifically one of the things the federal warranty law covers (can't think the name but it's been mentioned here before) because manufacturers way back WOULD void a warranty for not using their replacement parts. You can now use any replacement (oil filter, oil, spark plug) as long as it meets the specs (e.g. for oil API GL etc)

The law being discussed is the Magnuson Moss Warranty Act of 1987 and was a result of pressure from SEMA. Although it does indeed have the protections mentioned in the previous two posts it also gives the Manufacturer a very specific out if the cause of the failure is directly related to the aftermarket part. That may sound obvious, but when related to the oil filters in this thread consider the following; You put a Fram oil filter on your car and it splits a seam, you then lose your oil and damage the engine. The manufacturer can disallow that claim which they could not do if it were a factory filter. Not neccessarily likely, but the above warrantry scenario is actually real and was part of what went into crafting the legislation back in '87. I would also add that over the years (I won't admit how many) I've seen more than one Fram filter split a seam, never on a Mazda though.

That's why you put your filter on by hand, so you don't crush/break it. That's pretty funny. Anyways, they may have been referring to the type of filter being a cartridge style. I had a problem with my 3 for about a year after I bought it. No one would change the oil cause they didn't have that specific type in stock. They did have filters that match in size and thread diameter, but they wouldn't use them because their software said not to. It said Mazda OE cartridge type only. However, now every one has them and it's all good. I still use the dealer though cause they wash my car. Just hate when they move my seat.

Dealer said they cost $5 each so I'm not going to chance it for $2 more. Plus they deliver!
