Japanese is not = quality. Japanese is = obsessive complusive about details... not becaus eof something like pride or what you think of as work ethic. It has to do with
1. Unquestioningly do whatever you're told
2. Happily do repetitive mindless work
3. Don't make mistakes... mistakes get you singled out and chastied... usually publically. This is a big "no no" for Japanese... as ingrained into them throughout their lives.. particularly by the educational system.
4. Generally don't rock the boat... who are you to say different... since "we're all the same..." and what can you to do change anything... you're just one nobody...

Don't get me wrong, I'm not a fan of domestic makes, but your characterization doesn't match my experience. My '88 Ford Aerostar (Ranger frame?) didn't give me any problems until I found a shady mechanic. And my '92 Saturn SL2 was great until I totalled it. Heck, even ran great totalled.

Well, the best long-term reliable vehicle I ever owned was an '87 Ford Ranger 4-cyl 5-speed. I put 170.000 miles on it and then sold it to a guy who drove it to Nicaragua to give to his father. I heard somewhere, that truck had some Mazda parts. Swoope pointed out that the Ford Probe clutch and the rx8 carry the same aftermarket part numbers -- wasn't the Probe actually a Mazda MX-6?
'Seems there is a lot in common, and these days few if any vehicles are "pure American" or even" pure Japanese" -- whether you like it or not we are in a global economy.

My next-door neighbor works the line at the local GM truck plant. Funny, he doesn't exhibit any of the "qualities" that you attribute to UAW workers... Except worrying about his screen door. His dog just put a hole in it when he saw another neighbor walking their dog.

my brothers f150 was assembled in mexico. and my dad's tacoma was made in fremont california...

Not all "Fords" have weak air conditioning. My mom just got an 06 Tribute (Ford Escape) built at the Ford plant in Kansas City. Anyway, the air conditioner and fan darn near blast you out of your seat!

Ok Ok, So lets face it. No one except Mazda has mastered the rotary, so no matter what company it is, I wouldn't want them messing with it. The Japanese have a great thing going for them. Like they always say, if it ain't broke, don't fix it!!!!!

I have had several Ford products for the last few years, they have been great. The 8 is nice, but it started rattling just after 2000 miles, before the first oil change. However, I love the car, the best sport car I have had so far. BTW, I'm 32 years old.
It has been stated before: Toyota is overated, their quality perseption is actually higher that it actually is, and Ford quality is actually higher that most people believe. The problem comes from the 80's, American manufacturers got a bad image that still can get rid off. I still find people that think that only the foreign brands are using fuel injection, coilpacks, drivebywire, etc, they still think that domestic are using carburators and distributors. Actually, what I figure is that most people don't think, they just assume.
Yes, American manufactures make and import few models from foreing countries like Mexico and Canada, and some Foreign manufacturers make few models in America. However and most important, Most of the models from American manufacturers are still made in America and most models from Foreign manufacturers are still imported. Add to that that when you say "made in" you are just talking about the "final assembly", you have to also consider from where the components are coming from, and by far American manufactures provide more jobs to Americans, because even if some models are made in other countries, still they use American made parts and equipment. In addition, R&D of Domestic manufacturers is mainly done in America, most R&D of foreign manufacturers is done in other countries. In short, lets not hate Ford or GM, because way too many Americans make a living thanks to them.
Remember, it is not only the manufacturing of cars, but every single piece and componet that generates an American job, and now with the problem of outsourcing, I would really hate to see them bite the dust, we all would end up suffering the consequences. If you don't believe me, start researching about outsourcing, trade deficit and foreign debt... yes, we as a country, spend more money that we make, we import more than we export, and we don't need to be that smart to understand how bad that is.
The media is not helping, it has been continuosly stated that the media (TV, Radio and Magazines) is bias against domestic manufacturers. I remeber when the Nissan Titan came out, the media was trying to convince people that it was as much American as the F-150 because it was designed and manufactured in America, but the media forgot to mention that many more components of the Nissan Titan are imported.
