Mazda Extended Warranty

I received in the mail today a notice from Mazda that all 2004-2006 RX-8's are getting an extended warranty beyond the existing 4 yrs./50,000 miles. The coverage is extended to 5 yrs. or 60,000 miles. Man o' man, how many automobile manufacturers stand behind their product like that?! I'm one satisfied owner!

I just got the letter too. My initial response is: Why would Mazda do this? My thinking is that they are seeing more and more complaints about problems occuring just after the warranty is up that they feel the customer should not have to pay for so instead of dealing with all the complaints they just decided to extend the warranty to 60,000. Really what financial benifit is this to Mazda?
I guess I just would like to have been in the meeting where this was decided to understand why they did this.

Just to be clear, it is only an extension of the drive train warranty. (Engine, transaxle, rear end). The rest of the car remains at 4yr/50K.

If you read that warranty extension, it is not really the complete powertrain since it doesn't cover the pcm.

The pcm is covered by emissions warranty at least 8 years/ 80k miles.

If I'm not mistaken the original 4 yr 50K warranty is bumber to bumber, less wear items. This does not extend your original warranty. It only extends the power train another 1yr 10K

Tell that to Lexus. I had to sue to get warranty coverage for the pcm and o2 sensors at 40k miles. Their defense? The warranty didn't explicitly state that those components were covered. I had to hire an expert witness.
