Made a rookie mistake!

Well this morning I started her up and let it run for about 45 seconds before deciding I wasn't going to drive my car today. So I shut her off and jumped out...and you see where this story is going?

Later I came back and tried to start her up...flooded!

It was such an aggravating experience. It's flooded once before but I just did the procedure and it started up after about 3 long cranks.

This time it took every bit of 40, maybe even more, long cranks. I had to hook up jumper cables to keep the battery charged. Finally it started and it spit and sputtered like crazy for about 20 seconds. All the while smoke was billowing out the exhaust.

After a short drive I decided to head home. Everything looked ok until I decided to see how smooth the engine was running so I stepped on it just a little in 1st. CEL started flashing and wouldn't stop. Then it just stayed on.

Well, guess I got a trip to mazda tommorow.

It just ruined my almost good day!

Sorry to hear that, I also had a flooding experience... cranked after 2-3 tries, white/blue smoke out the back.. no CEL though...

Here's a weird one though, I was driving down home from Vernon, NJ (snowboarding) on 287.. huge 5 lane highway where everyone goes around 90 on most lanes - anyway .. after driving in 6th gear for a few minutes my CEL would flash, go off, and come back a minute later, do the same thing and stop.. I dropped it to 5th and it didn't show up, for about 10 minutes... upshifting to 6th and it started doing the same thing again. Put it back to 5th and it didn't show up. I did stop at a gas station before all this though, could have been a gas cap misfire.. and it most likely was as I didn't get a CEL all day driving today.

Don't worry mate, as long as your car sounds okay - it's probably a misfire.. turn it on and off after 10 minutes of driving in between, it worked for me last time I redlined it a few times in a row.

Most say it's pretty easy to deflood but as I found out today it's not always easy! I spent a good 1 1/2 hours on it.

Do you know if your car has the M flash (I believe this is the newest one)? Also, seeing as how your profile says that you're in Texas, my guess is that it was probably pretty warm. Is that true?

Sounds to me like you fouled your plugs. Take it to the dealer they should replace it for free.

Sherman, TX was probably pretty cold Sunday morning. It was high 30's where I live in the Hill Country, and I'm way South of him. He's north of Dallas headed for OK.

Well, it was cold probably 35 out. I agree thinking it was my plugs or some part of the ignition system. It's at the dealer now, so we'll see.

What's funny is when is i called my boss to tell him I might be a few minutes late cause of car trouble I told him my engine flooded. lol he says "Well that's your fault for being stupid and driving you sports car in rain water." I told him not that kind of flood, gas not water! rofl

Same thing (not as bad) happened to my 04. It was taken on a rollback to the dealership - I killed the battery. The service writer told me the '04s have the "weak" battery - the newer 8s have a better and more expensive battery. He tried to charge me for the battery. NOPE. Tried to split it with me. NOPE. They covered the cost of the battery, the tow, etc. I told him he was crazy if he thought I was going to pay a $*&@ing dime to fix a car with 9,000 miles on it... he agreed.

So, get the new battery... and don't pay for it

ARG!!! i flooded my engine too! i feel like a jerk
i was headed to the store friday night but realized after i started my car that i left the gate opener remote control for my apartment IN the aprtment, and shut off my engine about 25 seconds after starting it. i immediately realized what i had done was stupid, but i started it back up right away just fine. then i did the stupidest thing possible which was to turn it off again thinking it wa fine b/c it started right back up. then i left it over the weekend and this morning it wont start. i let it crank about 20 - 30 times, and did that probably 4 times, but each time the battery sounded weaker and weaker. deflooding possible?
i rode a scooter to work this morning.

If you spent a 1 1/2 hours cranking on your car that can't be good for the starter. I've never flooded mine but why after a couple minutes didn't you try to push start it(if a mt)? Good luck at the dealership.

I didin't spend the whole time cranking it. lol but It did take me about 40 times to get it going.

In response to Captain Mercury well, I know you have to keep the battery charged fully or its useless to crank it. You need a lot of power. I had my battery on jumper cables the whole time. btw somewhere I read, on rx8club, that it might take up to 40 cranks.

I just got called by the dealer and as wise kyliquid said I got the new designed starter, new plugs, and a more powerufl battery. They said it was a misfire cel.

Just a guess but it might be because the owner's manual specifically states do not attempt to push start this vehicle.

....dealer should deflood, replace plugs, starter, battery, update any flashes if necessary and shouldnt charge you a dime.

GL..

Is it *actually* bad to push start, or is that just one of those artifacts of our overly-litigious society?

Did you stop your car on a slight incline? I heard that will cause a flooding/stalling problem with the rotary ... if you've only driven a couple of feet and then turn off the engine.

If I need to my car to start I'm pushing that bad boy. I would say in both instances you are turning what needs to be turned(flywheel, etc.)? If the plugs are fouled though then I guess this wouldn't work?. I have no idea what damage it could cause to the drivetrain/engine. Maybe someone smart can tell us?

Do people that flood there cars touch/pump the gas when starting it up?

Mazda also says to not use syn. oil but many do anyways(not me though ) lol.

I would think they say not to because of it being dangerous to perform the task, as in dangerous safety wise.

I got the car back and everything is fixed. Runs Great.

just a note....when the dealer replaces the starter, battery, plugs, they also reprogram the computer with the most updated calibrations....i believe that its the R flash for the manuals and the S flash for the automatics for the 04 model year
