Low profile tires, Stock rims.

Hey, Does anyone here have lower profile tires on there stock rims? as i was searching youtube for exhasut i noticed a yellow 8 with a magnaflow catback on it and noticed the tires had a low profile to it with stock rims. Looked really nice. Can somone give info? any pics? what sizes. As soon as winter is done, Im getting new tires. So thinking of going with some low pros.

how LOW do you consider low profile? Is your car on stock suspension?

I guess you can put a 225/35-40/18 but with the stock suspension the fender gap would be BIG

Doesn't changing the overall dimension of the wheel make your speed-o-meter wrong? And how much smaller of a profile are you really talking?

Can you post a pic of that yellow 8? I really would like to see it. I have talked to some 8 owners with 225/40-18. They have stated the speedometer was not that far off but the lower tires have lowered there gear ratio some which they liked. I did'nt noticed any great differents in fender gap.

Pluses= lower gear ratio and lighter tire.

Minus= Bad gas mileage, speedometer off.

Am I missing something?

To me, those looked like stock sized tires on an RX8. The stock tires are pretty low profile to begin with........didn't look any different to me.

Two problems with lower profile tires.
1) Your speedometer will be wrong (it will read too high)
2) Your sidewalls may not offer much protection to your rims. Real world roads can bend alloy rims easily when the sidewalls are less than 4" (100mm)

For track purposes I'd get light weight 17 x 9 wheels with something like 255-35-17 tires to lower the car by about an inch and lower the effective gearing for better use of the power band.
I can use my Scan Gauge II to display corrected speed.

Very hard to see in the vid, but they do look smaller in profile. From experience you would feel much more of the road, but if you don't mind the harsher ride then it's up to you.

245/40 on stock wheels is your best bet. my speedo is off by 1mph, tested.

stick with in-range of the stock side wall size if you stick with stock rims.

This is not a very complicated question...you can use whatever tires you feel like as long as their diameter is close to stock..

Use the following calculator http://www.miata.net/garage/tirecalc.html

I wouldn't just lower the profile at the same width, because that way you gain almost nothing in performance, but your car will ride worse and your rims will get more beat up, and your speedo will be off...

If I was to be changing the tire size I would go with a 245/40/18. That's 1% smaller than stock diameter, which is perfect...

Also, I beleive making your car perform worse for the sake of "looking really nice" is called ricing out...please don't do it...

Just wonder'n, have you considered what it would do to your ride quality? A 35 spec tire would be noticeable in more than just "looks."

I have 245/40/18 on the back and 225/45/18 on the front and it seems fine i like it especially gives it a much more agressive look from the back. Our 8's with 18's can have plus sized tires from 225/45/18 to 245/40/18 but only in the back my sources at work tell me that the front can't handle that but with such a wider tire you don't recognize the smaller profile and it is only 5 MM so it's un noticeable

I have 225/40 series on stock rims. I did it to lighten and lower the gear ratio. I like it and the gap is not that bad at all. Speedo is not that off and I still get 21-24 Hwy MPGs.
