I just sold an 03 super charged cobra and there was a free modification to the air box that made the sc really make beautiful music. I just purchased my gt rx-8 yesterday and noticed it is extremely quiet. Are there any cheap mods like this for our cars?

Hmmm, the title to this thread is "louder turbo".

You do realize that the RX-8 does not have a turbo correct?

 

But all rotaries have a turbo right?! Since the last one did, that means they all do.... Right?

 

sorry so late.... the turbo makes the car quiet.... you are used to the supercharger whine....

That hasn't been true since 1991 with the 2nd gen RX-7. That was the last rotary to be offered in a nonturbo and turbo variants. In the US it was the only rotary car to be offered both ways. Other markets could get a turbo 1st generation RX-7 in '84 and '85. All 3rd generation RX-7's had twin turbos and all RX-8's are nonturbo.

 

A supercharger is typically much louder. Your Cobra had an Eaton roots style blower. Any positive displacement supercharger can be made louder by freeing up the intake. Otjher types of superchargers such as the centrifugals (Vortec, Paxton, etc) all whine pretty loudly as is.

A turbo on the other hand can be loud or quiet. Typically they are louder as they get larger and push more bost. This isn't always true though. Sometimes a small one can be heard to but not to the extent that you are used to hearing supercharger whine.

The RX-8 does not have a turbocharger so you aren't going to get any whine of any kind unless you add a supercharger or a turbo.

 

If i want to do the above mod, should I go with Folgers crystals or maybe a Columbian variety? HYow much more horsepower does the regular produce over the decaf?

you're not stupid, you were just given answers that you wanted to here for a awful car sales man. if you're serious about buying a rx8 everything you need to know is within this forum. it is a great car and now is a pretty good time to get a good deal on a used 2005.

 

Off the top of my head, here are your mistakes...

1. you believed a car sales man.
2. you bought a car w.o. even knowing if its F.I. or not
3. If the engine DID have a turbo, would you be able to locate it? Do you even know what a turbo looks like?
4. Did you bother to look under the hood of the car before you bought it? If the salesman had told you it was a V8, would you be out trying to buy cams?

Honestly, there was a sticker on the window that says in Black and White what type of engine is in it. You do know its a rotary right?

Lemme guess though, the salesman told you that the GT is turbo and the base model isnt?

yes bash all you want I deserve it. I have owned a 99 z28 6spd a 2001 SS z28 6spd and just sold my super charged cobra 6spd. UP until know I considered my self an informed car guy and assumed the 8 was fi because the rx7 was and of course the salesperson agreed. I did also look under the hood but didnt really try to locate the turbo, I was so impressed with the way it drove I had nothing to question. You dont question something that you thought you knew to be a fact. I also see a guy drive by my work everday that has definately got a turbo on his because it whines and whoohes when he shifts. I just assumed he made it louder. I am still in shock

 

You do if you know that salepeople generally know next to nothing about the cars they sell.

 

Well, now you can set a clear goal for yourself... TURBO YOUR 8!

 

Actually buy the turbo kit, then when you can't figure it out, give one of the rest of us a smoking deal on it.
