Looking at some 8's!

Hello to all! I'm Jake from Indy, and I am a verrrrrrry interested future owner!

First of all, I know this is my first post, but im genuinely looking for help on this matter. To the mods: if i'm posting in the wrong section, forgive me, im an honest noob, and I wouldnt mind it getting moved. (ive read the FAQ, as well as used the search, and cant find the IDEAL place for this post, my apologies)

I am really nervous about posting this, because I really dont wanna send the wrong impression. I am nearly completely sold on the RX8, and its by far the best car in my eyes in its class. Nothing comes close to the function, the looks, and performance of this car. I was blessed with the opportunity to drive a neighbor's 8 in a closed no-house prebuild neighborhood. it was amazing. I have been dreaming about this car for about a year now, and have started saving.

All that being said, I am hung up on two things. All three of my previous cars have hit the 200k mark on the odo, and one got 285. I drive my cars well, and i care for them even better. I have heard (rumors) that the 8 is meant for a short track life. as if its supposed to have a re-build every 75k. This worries me because i will probably drive this car until i die. (again im in love) Are these just rumors? and I know that the car is still pretty young, and people are logging good 100k numbers, but how much work has been done on their 8's? This brings me to my next question: Are they needy cars? I am fine with the consisent oil checks, and carbon-clearing, and paying attention to the little things with the rotary, but as for reliability...I dont have money waiting to be spent on a sensor here, vaccuum pump there, etc. I know cars are cars, and need parts, but again, rumors come up all the time about owners having regular issues with the car. any corrections to this?

finally, and i know i will get lots of flame and hate for this, but yes....the mileage. the good numbers im hearing are 18/22...and sometimes up in the high 20s. As for tuning, I dont mind sacrificing ponies for gas cash, unless its bad for the car. So, could a chip, or a ECU map help things in this regard? Again, I dont wanna hurt the motor, so if there's any thing in that neighborhood, what could we be talking about, and expenses?

I truly appreciate your time in reading, and I apologize if i've offended enthusiasts, as I may be insulting the nature of the car. I'm not planning on tracking it, but i love to drive, and i love the car. i hope to get some good feedback, and would loooove to avoid the banhammer. if you must flame me, go ahead, but know i meant nothing by my requests, just an interested buyer wanting some little issues fixed before im sold.

There's a forum member with over 180k original miles on his original RX8. How's that for reliability? The claims about rotaries needing rebuilds every 75k miles is utter bullshit.

I know you expect to hear this, but I suggest performing a few simple noob searches to answer your questions. They have been answered hundreds if not thousands of times.

Welcome to the forum.
