long trips or short trips

I have a hybryd highlander...only gets around 26 mpg in town and little better on the road. At first I was not so sure I made the right move by purchasing it though as the cost of gas climbs I feel better each time I fill the tank. Also have a one car garage and a short ride to work each day (ten minutes each way).

So, lord forbid, if one does not take their rx8 out each day would you say it is better to go on a single long trip to get the engine spinning...though use more gas...or just do the local drives (day in/day out driving). Yes, I have an automatic and no I don't figure I hit that magical 7250 mark as often as I should.

So that is it, say three daily driver rides in a week or a single four hour run once a month; for example.

Thanks for any input

Don't just drive it once a month...Why would you get this car if you only drove it once a month...I know you have an auto, but you still can have some fun. So i would do the local drives three days a week. but really you should do more, it's a brilliant car!

This is my DD and only car, i drive it every single day of the week. To school, work, and around town. I also drive it 4 hours every sunday because that is the day i drive to the mountains to go snowboarding.

Cars in general are meant to be driven, driving them too little is never a good idea either, and driving them excessively isn't always a good thing either, things will wear faster.

Anyways, you bought an RX-8. Go out and enjoy it more than once a month. I would atleast try to take it out weekends if you didnt want to use it for a daily driver. And i'm not sure if its better or not for short trips or long trips but I would think you would want to drive it longer since you hardly drive it. I would def take a nice drive on some backroads to get acclimated again to the car and remind you the reason why you have this car to enjoy.

Ok, I see I sort of worded that wrong. Did not mean to imply the rx8 would sit in the garage (yes it gets the one car garage space, not the toyota). What I meant to say was that if it is a choice to spend time driving the car on a long trip (2 hrs to my brothers place...and of course 2 hours back) or spend time driving it on short DD trips (remember I live only ten minutes from work) then which would be better.

Say every other week I do the DD thing in the rx8, with off weekends using it as a DD. I would guess using it for a 4 hr round trip to my brothers place one week would be better then a using it as a DD for that week...probably would have more hours in the seat driving that way anyway. Plus the mpg would be drop higher I would guess.

Also, could take the veterans expressway (tampabay fl)...sorry no mountain roads, which would allow for long miles driving at 60 to 70 mph. The cost of tickets in FL is insane so not looking to hit 80 or 90.

Why are you getting on to him for not driving the car? His car, his choice so drive the car whenever you feel like it bro. If you want to stare at it in the garage, then do it. If you want to drive it every single day, then do it. Don't let the opinions of other members influence if the car sees daylight or not. I personally put less than 100 miles a month on mine b/c I only drove it to get groceries or for a night on the town.

Roger that mmasts69. Indeed I shall drive her or not when I wish just don't mean to imply it sits in the garage for a month at a time. I figure a good long trip once a month is good for the rx8 plus every other week as a dd or weekend ride.
