a little help on color theory

im in the process of gettin an rx8 within about 3-4 weeks, im so psyched... anyways the other nite i was oogling at some 8's at the dealership and i happened to meet this car savvy asian man. i told him that i was hoping to get a yellow 8 and then he just had a nasty look on his face. apparently the yellow paint fades more as time goes on. now i dont know much about color theory, and really there arent too many yellow cars around richmond, va, so im SOL on this topic. as for now ive opted for a winning blue as it seems to be a safe bet, i.e. easy to maintain and doesnt fade...?! thanx

The Yellow seems to be the most hated color, except among those who buy it. I wanted a yellow 8, but so many people stuck their nose up that I went with my second choice. I suspect that you could pick a color at random and be as happy with your choice as someone who debates it for weeks...

Here's a test... try to find someone on this board who says he wishes he had gone with a different choice and buy Canzoomer's piggy-back ECU and you can attend the Rotary Revolution for free!

Press [Search] at the top and type "Poll AND color" without the quotes. You will find many interest threads, too many to list here.

I bought yellow ..i love it. OK everyone loves thier 8. I once owned a yellow mustang and i am a big fan of yellow cars so i was very affraid of not liking it. my second choice was also the blue( hear you have to wax that one alot to keep its shine. anyway i am very pleased with the yellow on the mazda rx-8.

btw-todays car paint are pretty fade resistant.

if you are going to believe old rumor of fading and this of that nature. just look and anyold blue car in Forida...they don't fade but they do self destruct by chipping away after a few year. heat? salt air? i dont know.

IMO todays paints of any color are much better and with regular waxing (of good quality) should keep you out of paint trouble.

bottom line you are gonna love your 8 no matter what. i love my yellow 8. i find excuses to look at it every chance i get.

ramble complete...

SpaidZ:

Of the RX8 colors, the red is the most metallic. Next is the blue. I have the blue. The yellow stands out the most which is best in traffic - if they see you they'll try not to hit you.

I love the blue. I zaino'd it soon after I got it and when it's in the sunlight the deep metallic shows through as if it had 10 coats of laquer.

Red. And pictures do it no justice. Gotta see it in person to appreciate it. Good luck.
Either way, you will love it! :D

I agree with Berni that today's paints are much more fade resistant than paints of old. However, I still think that brighter colors will fade more rapidly than darker colors if not maintained properly. Just regular washing and waxing should be more than enough to keep it in great shape for a long time. You'll have more blemishes and door dings before it fades.

Look here for more on how many people are unhappy with their color choice . . .

I'm not a fan of red cars but the red on the 8 looks incredible.

Fadinf of yellow... Additinal chipping with Silver ... The list goes on. I assume it would depend on the paint quality and the application. So generalizations should be limited to particular production lines and years IMO.

I say get the color YOU want. Can't think of a better way to be happy with your new "8".

The Nordic Green is magical in bright daylight. I love it.

I think the yellow is just a wrong color for any car, but especially one as nice as an 8. I want to put a Taxi sign on the roof whenever I see one. (Lock and Load, you there?)

To each his own...but as for us, we agree with Omicron. It's gotta be Titanium - especially with the red leather interior.

I agree with mngpao about the blue - I liked the color in the showroom, but when it's in bright sunlight, the blue deepens and looks much richer. In the late afternoon and early evening it picks up the color of the sky and glows in a completely different way. I tried out Meguiars NXT tech wax the other day, and it seems to deepen/darken the finish even further - subtle, but it's a little darker, I think. So yeah, I'm happy with the blue.

Does this Asian guy happened to work across the street at Infiniti and wear a glasses?

BTW I only know that Red is a color that fades fairly quickly other than that I would say not to get a color with pearl flake in it since if god for bid you need to get a panel re-spray the pearl flake will not match correctly.

SpaidZ, once you get your 8 or before then you should come to the Richmond VA weekly Friday night meet at the Starbucks in Short Pump Mall. It is for all car enthusiast, cars include RX8s, WRXs, Evos, ITR, G35, S2000, Porsche 911, pretty much anyone who like to hangout and talk about cars.

And here are most of the Richmond 8s on NE RX-8 Forum section.

BTW I personally like the Titanium color.

Titanium would have been my first choice Robnedie, but considering my 01 maxima is titanium, and my truck is a lighter silver, i wanna try to stay away from those colors, i want to experience something all new with the 8, and i think a unique color can do that for me

If you like the yellow get the yellow. Why would the yellow fade more quickly than any of the other colors? I'm assuming all of Mazda's paints are waterbased paints today, so much like other manufacturer's waterbased paints, I'm sure they'll chip more easily than older paints. Certain colors may show chips more than others and some colors may look faded when not cleaned as often (e.g., black, red, etc.) but that doesn't mean that they ARE faded.

I'd love to know the source of this "wise" man's information. I still say, if you like the yellow (I do) then get it. :D

yea, well now im guessing a definite choice between yellow and blue. im sure everyone has heard that the popos love to see red flying down I-95, but do they target yellow too? i mean its not like i would speed but i would rather be more oblivious to va's finest if ya know what i mean. some people say t hat yellow doesnt show the lines of the 8 as much, that really doesnt seem true as i spend at least 20 minutes a day staring at all the 8's everyday at cap. mazda, i think yellow would be perfect for me but i would hate to ever see a black mark on it, that would just bring a tear to my eyes

PIKACHU!!! J/K that was for L&L. The 8 looks great in any color. Get the one you like the best and don't worry about fading so much the car comes with a warranty against fading and rust. You should do fine. We look forward to seeing pics of your car no matter what color you choose... unless your L&L and then we don't like yellow.

By the way I bought aftermarket wheels for my Ti gray. The wheels were 17" white spokes (I got them for $60/wheel) and they made my car look like Bugs Bunny. Needless to say they are getting a black clear coat paint before they go on next year.
