Lighted rear accent???

Dealer dude just told me that some guy has a rear rotary accent that lights up with the brake lights. I think that would be cool. Anybody know where I can get one of those?

Mazurfer 05-01-2008 09:23 PM

I have the RX8Strakes stealth one and they used to sell them, but no longer do.

I don't know why they continue to have it on the website when they no longer sell them??????

Check the DIY section as several people have made their own.

Learjet_Pilot 05-01-2008 09:33 PM

Thanks. Will do.

Hi!

We kept the light on our web site as a way to gauge consumer interest. While we loved the product, we unfortunately had to discontinue it because of the expense to produce and difficulty with our supplier. However, all of the emails and message board comments spurred us into action to expedite the development of a new solution.

We've been working on a new offering and plan to make it available in the next few weeks.

Mazurfer 05-02-2008 12:47 PM

No..............damnit!
I like being somewhat unique! :banghead:

To Mazurfer, you'll still be unique. This new version will be a bit different. :-)

AJ's Shinka 05-07-2008 11:36 PM

Subscribed! What will the price range be?

Renesis07 05-07-2008 11:47 PM

+1 on price?

laythor 05-08-2008 02:02 AM

Don't care what they charge, can't be anywhere as expensive as the OEM rear fog light. I'll just send heather a stack of cash and wait by my mailbox!

alz0rz 05-08-2008 02:41 AM

Hey I want a wonderwomen or bat girl one...:lol2: No jks...maybe the rx8 one...

Mazurfer 05-08-2008 01:06 PM

^........Yeah, I've seen that one....but to be honest...didn't like it.
My original from RX8strakes is the Stealth, so it's kinda CF looking when off. When lights are on, you get those 3 corner LED's coming on and then when brakes applied you get the ones at the center. With lights on and brakes you get both.

RotaryFX.com 05-08-2008 07:06 PM

We haven't finalized a selling price for the new light, but it will be significantly less than the original.

laythor 05-09-2008 04:42 AM

no worries... i'm with you, the OEM light is not very pretty. and you have to run a boat load of wires to get it to work.

Mazurfer 05-10-2008 08:23 AM

True, about the wiring...................and at least we know he has some taste as well! :)
Will be interesting to see what the new on looks like because I like that original so much and the install was great...............nice, clean, and easy.

Will the new one be easy to install with limited knowledge of wiring? I am assuming you tap into the license plate...?

sebarx8 05-13-2008 04:32 PM

check the rx8stakes page for intall intruction

Mazurfer 05-13-2008 06:32 PM

Ahhhhhh.....but you assume the "new" one will wire like the old one and that may or may not be true.

RotaryFX.com 05-14-2008 04:12 PM

Hi Everyone,

Here are more details regarding our new RX-FX Rear Rotary Stealth Light.

It will be more of a do it yourself kit, which is why we're going to be able to offer it at a significantly reduced price compared to the old light.

It will utilize a single high powered red LED bulb with easy wiring. Installation will be similar to the old light with the exception of the lens. The new dark red lens we're offering will need to be inserted into the rotary recess with silicone sealant that will be included with the rear light kit.

We do have pictures on the site of the new light. We also hope to post installation instructions on our site prior to the expected June release.

Thanks for all of the feedback and we're looking forward to the launch.

Good Luck Selling That Plastic S______

seriously, this can't be the replacement for the old one - which was SO SLICK. This one looks chinsy - not what I was expecting from RX8Strakes.com

laythor 05-22-2008 06:10 PM

It might just be me, but it doesn't look like you could fit the rear accent on with that red plastic piece. If the accent were on I think it would clean up the look of the glued in plastic.

sebarx8 05-22-2008 06:33 PM

go to the juckyard closer to you .
get any socket an light bulb put them in u pocket is free, wire it to u car ligths
get flex acrilic red o any color cut it glue it done maybe maybe it will cost you 5 dollars no more
this is a f---- joke

dag14qb 05-22-2008 07:17 PM

how much? there may be value in it if it is right price

chancejat 05-22-2008 09:49 PM

what happened? this one looks like pooo....

RotaryFX.com 05-22-2008 11:14 PM

I felt that I needed to personally address the negative comments we’re seeing here concerning our new light. We’ll be the first to agree with you that it is not a direct replacement for what we used to sell. We wanted to position it as more of a do-it-yourself kit, at a price point that was very reasonable. No drilling, everything already assembled, all necessary hardware and photo instructions included, but still a bit customizable for the user.

The old unit was “slick.” We won’t argue that. It was a self-contained sealed unit with about 17 large LEDs on a specially cut circuit board. The plastic lens was hand-cast and hand-polished and available in both red and a dark tinted “stealth” version. The center lights and corner lights could be set up to work independently or together - brake or parking lights, or both. We even had it designed to fit behind a rotary accent. All this, and it retailed for only about $125. Nice, right?

We only had one problem with it. No one wanted to buy it. It didn’t help that this was mostly a U.S. only product, as many other countries already have the factory fog light installed. I think we actually got more emails asking us to significantly lower the price to something ridiculous, than we had actual orders.

The end result was that some of the parts suppliers we were working with required larger commitments from us (more units and/or increased cost for such a low volume). Figuring it out today, if we tried to bring it back, we’d probably have to price it well into the $200 range to make it worth our while. Given the demand we had at $125, it’s not something we’ll even consider.

Here’s the one thing you need to keep in mind concerning the RX-8 aftermarket parts industry. This is the thing we try to remind ourselves of daily.

We do not drive a Mustang!

So there’s not always enough of a potential market for new products. I don’t know if you all understand how much it actually costs to have something manufactured, especially when the production volumes are so low. It’s not cheap. Really. Tooling fees can be a killer. Depending on the manufacturing process used, you could be looking at tooling in the low thousands to tens of thousands before you even begin paying for any parts. And then, if you’re not buying enough parts, your per unit cost begins to rocket up. Ask anyone manufacturing aftermarket parts for this car, and they’ll probably tell you they are making parts in the hundreds, and not in the thousands.

We do have a prototype of the new unit installed on our car, and are very happy with the results, even compared to the old LED unit. But, if you’re not interested in our new light, we completely understand. We knew going in it wouldn’t be for everyone. You know what's strange? The old LED unit got quite a bit of negative press too before we even sold the first one, and now you'd think it was the greatest thing since sliced bread. :)

I do see an opportunity here. If any of you would like to tackle manufacturing a better model with all the bells and whistles, and can maintain a minimal production volume and consistent reproducibility, we would be very interested in discussing it with you. I’ve seen some of the do-it-yourself threads. I know there are a lot of very creative people on this forum with a lot to offer this community in the way of innovative products. Since we’re always looking for new products to add to our store, we’d be happy to provide an outlet. :)

it looks cool. nice job.

laythor 05-23-2008 12:36 AM

I'm still ordering it along with a replacement rear accent.

I DID! I had my money in Paypal ready to pay you until I saw they were discontinued. Any chance you have any leftover (even a prototype) that I could take off your hands? :)

If not, what can you offer in more of a 'stealth' fashion. I, like many other members like that look instead of the red lens, especially in its new form. If that had a dark lens, it could help.

Also, from what you are describing, and from what I see in the photos, can this NOT work with Rotary Accent?

nvrfalter 05-23-2008 12:19 PM

that would make mugatu very upset

200.00 for the old l.e.d done when??
hell yes !!!!

We're really very sorry. We only had it available for a year (7/06-7/07), and that was just long enough to sell off the first teeny tiny production run. We just don't have any left that we could sell.

We picked a very dark red for the lens, which might look a little redder in the pictures from the fill-flash. We've discussed adding a dark tinted version as an option too.

Sadly, it won't work with a rear accent.

Aipex8 05-23-2008 05:03 PM

The best looking unit is still the OEM rear fog light which can also be wired as a third brake light: (this is not mine, just a random pic I found of it)

http://gate.crashing.org/~fray/Rear%...-Images/34.jpg

I have the Derwankel home-brewed model. Unfortunately I broke the socket off of the back of mine, so currently it doesn't light up. I plan on putting a larger 7443 dual filiment bulb in it as my next DIY project and wiring it as a 3rd taillight & brakelight.
