License plate question

Does anybody do anything to plug up the bottom holes in their license plate? It looks odd with the top holes being used and the bottom holes empty. I suppose I could get a protector with a border all around.

Use plastic lic plate bolt/nut but cut the bolt short so it just fits thru the nut.

There are "wide bottom" license plate frames that cover up the bottom holes, like these for example: http://www.autoanything.com/licensep...A1311A0A0.aspx

I wouldn't plug those bottom holes - they're there for drainage.

I did not like the bare edge of my plates. I wrapped some door edge molding around the perimeter to give them a finished look. But I made sure to not block the drains.

I'll look into the plastic bolt fix.

TrochoidMagic, I'm still looking for one in town that'll do the trick.

Thanks.

Grant me another opportunity to sound like a moron but ... can those plastic frames fit over the smoked plastic cover that protects my plate? If so, all is solved cause I have a number of them but I never tried that cause it doesn't look like it would fit.

Don't know if it would fit over your smoked plastic cover—probably depends on how thick the plastic cover is. (Oh, and by the way, the frames on that website are brass—not plastic.)

Ken-x8, i guess it would be good for drainage. Thanks.

I'll play around with a few of your suggestions and see what I come up with. I know this was a pretty insignificant thing to discuss.

my rear bumper where the plate goes is all cut up. seriously crappy license plate mount design in my opinion. in comparison, my beamer has an oem frame mount that's just slightly lifted off the body of the car so the plate or plate frame never touches or damages the body or bumper of the car. damn germans think of everything and cover all the details. mazda could learn a thing or two on these kinda things.

That's NOT a problem. I think of this as a place where I can bring up stuff that my friends and family would consider insignificant. Which it is, but if you're a car guy, it's not.

The Mazdaspeed frame has plugs for the bottom holes, and little rubber feet on the back to protect the car finish - it was the first thing I put on my car. BTW, be aware that in some states (like Illinois) ANY plastic cover (smoked or not) is illegal and you can get ticketed for it...

But yeah I guess the sun burned it yellow and you cant read the plate after that

I actually looked at a lot of plate frames before I settled on the Mazda chrome version, as the best looking. Jedi has fine taste.

When I bought my first new car in 1977, (also silver, BTW) a good friend gave me one of those personalized license plate frames. He thought it was cool but to me it was so embarrassing that I never put it on the car. I still have it, hanging-up in the basement, and no, it will never go on my 8. But it does have immense sentimental value.

I had mixed feelings about getting a personal plate ... never had one before and didn't want to seem like a dork. Finally settled on "Atomic 8".
