When does it happen? What causes it to happen?

Does it increase when you speed up or stay the same? also I hope you checked your engine while on under the hood to see if anything is loose. If its more of a clicking noise you might just have a pebble stuck between your brakes and tires (happened to me a few times annoying as hell but a quick left right turning of the wheels over a bump does the trick to free the pebble.)

Do you hear it only when the car is moving? Or do you hear it when the car is stationary with the engine running? Or both?

I'm having a similar problem. I couldn't reproduce it for the Mazda techs. Mine only happens at idle. Sometimes when the car's cold and sometimes when the car's warm. It comes and goes. Starting to drive me crazy quite frankly. My sounds coming from the same area highlighted in the picture. Sounds like it's coming from the intake somewhere down on the side of the motor.

NOthing wrong don't get excited. Just curious.
I am thinking it might be the air pump. Can you here the noise with the hood up?
See the black round thing on a black plate to the left and down a hair? That is the air pump.
Check it out.
It's right on the edge (left) of the pic above the strut bar.

yah u can heat it with the hood up. i don't think its that because i toll a screwdriver and put it to my ear and i was getting the most vibrations/sounds from the circled part in the pic.

chris,

you have an 04 correct... is it an auto or 6speed. how many miles are on it???

what mods have been done if any? is it rhd or lhd? i know it is just a pic but the more info the better...

does the knock increase with engine rpm or stay the same?
does the knock change if you put the clutch in or out?

Younggen didn't your engine burn up. Is this the new engine knocking??

Younggen didn't your engine burn up. Is this the new engine knocking? Theres no tapins to lift the pistons so I don't know. Could be some kind of carbon build I had that happen to 1973 Cadillac I owned back in 1979. I ran some engine flush through it and gunned the engine after and drove it about 30 miles on ther expressway, it stopped and I drove it for another 4 years.

Take it back to your Mazda dealership. Hopefully they can hear it and fix it.
