Just bought the car...not sure what oil to top up with ?
Alright so i just got my car about a week ago. NOw i know what youre thinking, this is gna be another synthetic vs non synthetic oil thread. Well its not. Heres the problem. Checked oil last fill up and i need to add some. But im not sure what to add. The previous owner said he used non synthetic and that he used mobil 1. But i went to Canadian tire (from toronto) and mobil 1 IS synthtic, so im a bit confused. I bought mobil 1 5w-20 synthetic cause he said thats what he used. now my question is .. if theres non synthetic in there... and i add the mobil 1 (synthetic) will that harm the engine at all. I know for a fact he used 5w-20 but im not sure about the viscosity. I wanted to do an oil change to start fresh with one kind but i dont wanna have to spend money. SO can i just add a bit of mobil 1 in there ??
THanks in advance.... im in love with this thing... literally i go outside to check on her every like hour lol.

The consensus is that synthetic is OK... though Mazda NA doesn't recommend it. The main reason being that no two synthetics are alike in terms of chemical makeup.
The other consensus here is that 5w20 is WAY too thin. The bulk of folks here run 10w30 or 10w40.
Could you provide some background on the car such as # of miles? Did the previous owner do his own oil changes? Is there a sticker in the window indicating what was used?

I know i can use synthetic. My question is since im not sure what oil is in there right now (whether synthetic or non)... can i just add a bit of synthetic till i do my next oil change ? Will that damage the engine ?
Car is 06 with about 61 000 km which is roughly 38 000 miles.

I'd just change it all. What the hell........it's not that expensive and doesn't take that long. That way you know what you got.
Personally, I don't run synthetic, but a some do. Viscocity..............I think most agree........5W20 is light.
This oil debate has been going on for years here, so good luck with any decision you make. Do some searches on Premix as well.

Mixing does not hurt.
