Jdm Rx-8!!!

hello, to anyone who knows anything about the topic or can contribute any information:

what are the different trims of the RX-8 sold in japan? the only one i know of is the Type-S which is the sporty model. also what do these trims include and how are they different from one another? what was the first month/year that rx8s were shipped to their owners in japan? what JDM trims do our Sport/Base, Touring, and Grand touring trims correspond to? Has mazdaspeed released any other RX-8s besides the Mazdaspeed Type-S?

thanks in advance

I have actual JDM RX-8 brochures from one of my trips to Tokyo. The RX-8 was first sold in Japan in April '03. There are 3 primary trims:
- RX-8 (which is like our base)
- Type E (which is like our GT, but with the standard power engine: 210 ps)
- Type S (which has the high power engine: 250 ps)

Then there are the specials:
- Sports Prestige Limited (Like our Shinka, but can be had in more colors)
- Mazdaspeed RX-8 (I & II - a very limited run of complete MS cars)

Main differences between the USDM & JDM: horsepower rating (238 vs 250/197 vs 210) and the JDM model is a little lighter. Also, you can get a 5 spd MT with the standard power Renesis, the AT is an option. 6 spd MT only with the high power.

Actually, all this information can be found at Mazda Japan's website: www.mazda.co.jp
Or, play the PS2 game Gran Turismo 4, the model & specs shown are all the JDM specs for the RX-8.

PS and HP are not the same numbers. That 250 is roughly equivalent to 238.

The changes to emissions regulations (slight hp loss) and cat changes are the primary difference in the performance of the 6 speed US model and the Type-S.

Right, my bad. But your calculation is slightly off.
250 ps = 247 hp
238 hp = 241 ps

yes because the RX line in japan is G-dlike...in fact due to the nature of Japan many feel a Rotory engine is G-d or G-d's heart :D

I have a late '03 type S which, annoyingly, is limited to 7000rpm in 5th and 6th - anybody know how to de-limit it?

the Type S is a 5sp right? u don't want to delimit it...you wont go faster...u need to make major changes before you can get into the higher rpm bands...changes that will cost more then trading your car in for a 6sp High Power model

Type S is the 6speed manual JDM, but the japanese seem to limit the top speed for some silly reason

There's probably some kind of aftermarket ecu that can remove the limiter. No idea though, just guessing.

Do you live in Japan or some other country that gets the JDM models?

1. i love you

2. a few more questions, first does standard power mean 4 port RENESIS/high power=6 port? also is the "touring" trim something unique to north american market? or do one of the japanese cars have simular specs? and is type e limited to standard or is high power an option?

i'll be sure to check out mazda's site and GT4
