Okay, so the RX gets terrible gas mileage. Yep. There it is. It's not going to change. However, we all agree that the car is an unbelievable deal - performance (speed, handling, braking), style, comfort, safety, versatility...

Take the $28,000 (or whatever) you paid for the car, add up the $300 bucks a year EXTRA you're going to spend in gas... fast forward a decade and now you've got $3,000. Wow. that's a lot of money. So tell me, what $31,000 car is a better deal than the RX-8? Anyone? Anyone? Nope. Keep fast forwarding... Now it's 2024, you've spent an extra $6,000 in fuel. Show me the $34,000 car that would've made you happier for the past 20 years.

I'll admit it. My first tank pissed me off. But when I look at the big picture, it's simply a non-issue. I don't even try to better the MPG - I drive the car as I planned to when I first drooled over this thing. Zoom Zoom...

For me it's 600 dollars, but I'm at 24k miles in 12 months so that shows how much I love to drive this car!

You are absolutely right. When the light comes on, I add gas. Period

I gotta tell you, I love this car. For the price of a loaded Accord, to have this much style and enjoyment and attention.

Nuff said, Period.

Mine is changing! I used to get about 180-200 miles per tank (yes I know this is not an accurate measure), then after the M flash, my mpg improved to 200-220 per tank. Then about 4 weeks ago I got 250 out of a tank, and now (today, I filled up this morning), I put 130 something on her and the needle shows over half a tank! Woohoo my first 260-280 tank, like Polak gets. The bottom line is this car is NOT consistant! It has a long learning curve. For the record, I hit the redline several times a day.

Yes its a Rotary it's not anything like a piston engine, Thank God! Not that there is anything wrong with that , pistons are what got us into the love of power. There is no comparison unless you had big $$$ to spend on a engine that would rev like it does. It's electric and can get good economy if you keep your foot out of it. If you are getting poor mpg and its not you then you work with Mazda, calmly and with patience and they might work with you to see if anything is wrong. The problem with this car is it is beging to be driven. Most of the time I drive it like I dont care what the mpg are. Then I'll set the cruz on the hwy at 65mph and see what it could get if it was more important to me. I got 27.5mpg good, now back to the real world. Love the 8! It's a Good value!

I live in California with outrageous gas prices all the time, and I paid alot more for my 8 than some of you because of where I live. If I gave a rats a$$ about mpg, I would have bought a Prius and lived anywhere BUT California. I figure I've worked hard many years, I deserve this car, and I'm gonna drive the hell out of it despite the cost!

I consistently get nearly 300 miles out of a tank of gas and I don't drive with fuel economy in mind. I drive it as it should be driven for whatever situation I am in. I have no complaints and I love my 8.

Thats what Ive been thinking. Your budget must be really maxed out if you can pay 30K + for the car, but cant afford to fill the tank.

My girlfriend bought a 2004 Toyota 4Runner and she only gets around 20mpg's.

So when Im filling my tank I just think to myself Im getting SUV mileage but in a car thats much more fun to drive

I'm 100% with 800Degrees on this. I could give a flying rip about mpg, that's not what I bought the car for. But this forum has me so paranoid, I can't help but gage my mpg with each fill up. Enough already!

[QUOTE=Old Rotor]"Yes its a Rotary it's not anything like a piston engine, Thank God! It's electric and can get good economy if you keep your foot out of it. The problem with this car is it is beging to be driven. "

:D :D What a problem to have!

That's the difference ... in many cars you are a passenger in the 8 you are the driver .... part of the car.

"Many sporting cars are for car enthusiasts.
The RX-8 is for driving enthusiasts," naturally this invites poor mpg.

Some folks have had very poor results. I too track my mileage ... for info only .... I bought the car to drive it. enough said.

If you thought the mileage threads were getting old, here's some other classic's

"What's an M flash? I did a search and nothing came up but everybody is talking about it, could you tell me all about it? Does it have something to do with the computer?"

"What parts are available to make my car faster? I want to make 300 whp with simple bolt on's. Is this possible?"

"I'm developing a new intake/ehaust/turbo/insert mod here. I ran it on a dyno and got 20-200 more hp but the printer was broken so I have absolutely no proof to back up my statement. I've been working on cars since I was 20 years old though so I promise it really really works"

"My Air Conditioner is blowing warm air, anyone else got this?"

"Am I the only one with rust on my brake rotors?? WTF this is a $30,000 car and blah blah blah............."

"My car took 3 seconds to start this morning, does that mean it's flooded?"

It's amazing how many excuses can we come up with to defend our beloved car :p

For the record, the mileage bothers me quite a bit, but I accepted the fact that I only get 20 mpg in mixed driving. Hearing some other folks, I'm actually quite happy about my numbers :D

Yo, 800 I like your attitude. I am among the first to own an '8 and if you think mileage talk is bad now, you shoulda been here a year ago. Even before we knew about the "missing" HP. Many of us were miserable, including me, until I finally through away my mileage log, made a conscience decision to just not worry about it, and enjoy the damn car. I'm a lot happier now and I think your math is right on. Thanks, dude.

erm....one little thing....In the US you pay next to nothing for fuel we are LUCKY to get $7 a gallon (US Gallon) and thats if you shop around! ....

Stop complaining, you get the car cheaper than us (ok missing a few toys), your fuel is cheaper than ours so MPG should not be on a complaint list!

Thank God someone put this thread up! For God sakes people, it's a goddamn sports car! If you've never had one, here's a list of things you can expect (and they are all RX-8 truths, right gang?):

1) It gets crappy gas mileage, and the harder you push the accelerator, the more gas it burns. BFD! If you have to whine about it, you can't afford it!

2) It will burn a bit of oil. For the record, I have two friends with BMW M cars - an M3 and an M5. Their oil consumption is a quart per 1500 miles. Performance cars have more aggressive lubrication systems that inherently consume oil.

3) The gearbox will whine. Funny how people worry about this, but if you've ever driven a real sports car before your RX-8, what makes you worry is what makes us gear heads smile. I love the mechanical noises this car makes! The gearbox whine, the "whirring" noise from the power steering, the funky idle sound, the induction honk under full accelleration, the popping and burbling just off the gas in gear, etc. Sounds like a real car, not some slush-boxed family hauler.

4) The insurance will be expensive

5) Other people will give you the finger just for having it. Just smile and wave.

6) Cops will pay more attention to you.

7) The car will develop rattles

8) The tires will make noise

etc. etc. etc.

I'm so sick of hearing "well damn, for $30,000, this thing hadn't better make that noise!" or "but it's only 1.3 liters, why does it get crappy mileage?" or "I'm worried. I have 2200 miles since the last time I checked my oil and it needs a quart."

HELLO!

YOU'RE DRIVING A SPORTS CAR!

FLOOR IT, BURN RUBBER AND ENJOY IT!

So what I want to know is how come so many people can find this forum to bitch about the 8, complaining about things that have been out and talked about and often resolved, but didn't come here to investigate the car before they bought it? ... or read any of the automotive magazines that reviewed it?

I love my car! It's a great ride...every day. I hope that after a rant or two here they can settle back and enjoy all that's GREAT about this car.

On a highway trip, I got about 410km(255miles) when the light came on. This means I could get to 430-440km(270miles) with an empty tank. I think its quite good since the car was loaded, climate control was on all the time and I redlined it a few times.

Cars competing the 8 would get pretty much the same milage (I know cuz I've tested some)
