IPod Adapter Review

Well I just bought the Audio Link IPod integration adapter and installed it in my RX-8. First of all, the install was really simple (with the exception of the hidden bolt on the drivers side under the dash). Once I got the stereo out and routed the cabling for the adapter under the ash tray, everything was really simple and it all fit together really well. There was plenty of cable there to go out to my center console and into my passenger seat.
The actual operation of the unit is easy too and works pretty much as described. You touch the CD key twice and the LCD displays the signature EX: prompt. The steering wheel controls work great as do the controls on the stereo. It disables the volume control on the IPod itself and uses the car's volume exclusively. The ONLY complaint that I have is that when you turn the car off and leave the IPod plugged in it won't resume play automatically. I've found that I have to unplug it and plug it back in to get it working again. Not a huge deal since I'd likely do this anyway to take my IPod with me when I leave the car.
All in all, I like the adapter really well and I'd give it a good recommendation.

I just wanted to add on, no sense in starting another thread
I received the audiolink flash MP3 player adapter today, those guys from the rpmstore have superfast ninja shipping hehe
Installation was really easy, altho I did cut myself on the sharp metal bit under the steering column looking for the 'secret' bolt ...
I followed the instructions from this thread getting everything apart, total breeze: https://www.rx8club.com/showthread.php?t=36001&highlight=audiolink

The audiolink has a builtin flash card reader and shipped with a USB flash card reader in addition, the builtin one had trouble reading my 8GB SDHC card, the USB one works fine tho, just as advertized!!

I did the same exact thing installing my OEM Mazda iPod kit. I spent a good 15-20 minutes looking for that "secret" bolt.

Congrats on your install.

Update

Yes, the button you use to access the IPod is through the CD Player option. You hit the CD play button once to use the CD player itself, twice to use the IPod.

As for the IPhone, I suspect that it will work fine. I use an IPod touch myself. I'm still having the problem where if I don't first disconnect my IPod after turning off the car, I loose the integration to the steering wheel and console controls. The audio path still works though and I only have to unplug the IPod and plug it back in. I have also upgraded the software on my IPod to Apple's latest SW release.

One other item of note... I bought the model with the optional phono adapter plug. I have now had to go back and wrap that plug in electrical tape to prevent it from shorting out on the sheet metal under the center console. I started getting really bad static in the playback as a result of this issue. When I installed the unit, I hid the processor module under the center console, just in front of my stick shift and then ran the wire out through the cup holder area. Under the center console is bare metal and can easily ground out that phono connector. Wrapping it in electrical tape fixed this problem for me.

Yes, the CD player will still work as before. The CD button will now cycle the deck between the CD and iPod.

I've had this adapter for about 8 months now, it is awesome!

It was much easier than I thought to install and route the cable to the cup holder area. Mine resumes playback just fine, but I did have to update the iPods firmware first thing, which meant installing iTunes on my PC, yuck.

I can't imagine how I got by for so long without this adapter.

When I read this I remember when I was just like you back then.. until thieves broke into my supposedly secure downtown apartment's parking garage, took my iPod nano and mini, Head unit, audio system, and GPS nav system and left this chaotic interior mess out of my Eclipse. A nissan altima parked next to me got her laptop stolen...

I think they are like pro unlockers or something like that because there were no damage at all to the vehicles and I make sure I lock the door every time I get out from my car.

Moral: Don't leave em :D :D

A question about this unit with the aux in option- are both the aux in and ipod active at the same time? that is, would it be possible to add a bluetooth speaker device, and connect its output to the aux in, so when the iphone received a call at it mutes, it would then send its signal to the bluetooth device, which would output to the aux in?

Mine won't play either when I turn the car off but I just found that if u switch it to CD or FM or something and then turn the car off it will resume again when u switch it back to EX when u start the car again.

Is there a DIY thread for the Audio Link install? I'm a little confused as to how this would plug in with the CD player? I currently have the CD and XM radio on the HU but I don't use the XM.

Any help on a DIY is appreciated !

Do you have XM installed on the stock system? I was in the audio store today asking about it and they couldn't find one that would input XM through the stock SAT button.

I want XM because I already have a subscription, and I don't really like how aftermarket systems look.

Anyone know if you can do this?

'07 GT w/ 6 CD Bose if it makes a difference.
