Idiocy or Ignorance?

I went to a "friend's" house today and the first he said to me after opening the door and seeing my new RX-8 was... "WHY?"
WTF?! how about a courtesy "Wow" or "Nice car" or even "Hi" would of been better.
What am I suppose to say else than, "Because it's an awesome car." The thing I hate is to have to justify myself defending my baby.
I asked him as why he ask "why?" and he said because of what he had heard about the rotary!

Is it me or is it that every freaking soul that does NOT possess one of these Jewels thinks badly of them?
So hence my question, is it idiocy or ignorance???

I have to be more prepare next time I get hit with stupid comments like that.

Well lets see. This what I found.

Idiocy:
1. an offensive term for extreme lack of intelligence or foresight
2. an offensive term for an extremely unintelligent or thoughtless act

Ignorance:
1. lack of knowledge: lack of knowledge or education
2. unawareness: unawareness of something, often of something important

So based on this I would go with Idiocy

Except for that particular comment, same here nothing but props... and that is why I was cut off guard.

When I think about it now, his comment was probably due to the fact that my "friend" knows I can afford a more expensive car, but yet still choose the 8.
The thing about the 8, is not so much about numbers but rather the feel, satisfaction you get from driving it.

I think a lot of us can afford more expensive cars.

Looking at what you get from the RX-8, I think it could have been sold as a 40k car with a few minor tweaks to the interior. But that wasn't the price range that Mazda knew would hit critical mass. So we got a bargian of a price on the car. Can't complain about that!

Yep. People are floored when I tell them how little I paid for the car. Their guesses are usually too high by about $5k - $7k.

i think some people are a. disguising jealosy, and b.thinking in your best interests that the decision to buy one isn't practical. Which in some ways is true, especially if you live where it snows a lot. Sure the car with winter tires can handle it, but not as well as a front wheel drive with less HP. and finally c.maybe they're concerned you can't handle the power/speed of the thing. I dunno. I've had a mixed reaction. Having to defend my decision alot aswell. Most people are turned on by the car, and totally inlove with it.

Most comments I get are good ones, but I do get a few "why's" myself. I think these people feel threatened and or jealous. But next time you are cruising the road, take a look at other motorists' faces when they see your car, big smiles, long stares, and young kids literally go nuts over the 8, thats proof enough of the love for this car. Anyone who says bad things just wish the car was parked in 'their' own garage. All this is IMHO of course!!

I got into this discussion sort of today... my friends were like "why do you want that"? ~sigh~I dunno, why do you want whatever it is you want...shiet.

I find myself having to defend my decision to go with an 8 more than people saying "hey thats great".... and all the people I have to defend from are guys who don't know jack-**** about cars and are far from enthusiats.....their just band wagon jumpers and have absolutely no ability to objectively evaluate a vehicle

waste of time.

I've only gotten, "can I ride in it?" or "lemme check it out" from other people. And after riding in it and I've let some friends drive it, they've all said, the rotory engine is really smooth and they like it. So take him for a spin and you'll find him a changed man.

I wouldn't worry if your friend hates your car. It's not his. A lot of people have opinions about this car based on power alone. However, that's not the point. If you want power, just buy an engine.

I bought the RX-8 for the whole package, and so far, I've had nothing but positive comments.

My vote would be ignorance, if they understood how a Rotary engine worked they might feel different about it. I have only received positive comments about my car, however most think that it cost a lot of money and they are usually shocked when I tell them I paid a whole lot less than the Lexus they just coughed up a lung for.

My guess is that it's jealousy. I've had nothing but great comments from people, except for a friend of mine whose only comment was, "gee, where do you wind it up". Whatever that means, my guess is some toy reference. I completely ignored the comment. I figure if people are jealous, maybe they should work a little harder so they can buy a nice car, too. It never ceases to amaze me how petty people can be when they get a little jealous. They never look at themselves, and try to improve, they just take it out on others.

What I've found interesting is that I traded a $41,000 '04 Audi in on mine, and all the comments I have gotten are about "moving up" or "spending more". Everyone thinks the RX-8 cost more than the Audi I had. I guess it has more impact when looking at it.

Well, I went ahead and spent the time educating him about the 8 and the rotary. He was under the impression that since the RX-7 had so many issues - the RX-8 was automatically doomed to the same faith, not understanding that the Renesis is actually the next generation rotary to the RX-7.

And finally I drove him to a empty parking lot, letting him test drive my 8, afterward his comment was... "Wow, this is what a rotary feels like?"
I rest my case.

That is definately ignorance talking. If I drive up in a brand new Aston Martin, or Jaguar, will your friend call them fords too?

How about if I drove up in a $500,000 Bentley. Will your friend scoff and claim I paid way too much for a Volkswagon?

Ford does not own Mazda. They have controling share of 33% but do not own Mazda like they do Jaguar, Volvo, Austin Martin, etc. etc. Do you guys consider Mitsubishi owned by Daimler Chrysler or Nissan owned by Renault? Same thing..
