I think this is complete bullshit but . ..
I think this is complete bull **** ,but I ran a search on this site and some people are saying this is true. and some people say its bullshit .. . Well I searched the web and found this
"Word's out that diagnostics were run on the RX-8 and it turned out that it was running less than 250 horses, around 200 or so. Several complaints were placed with the president of Mazda USA and those who complained were given the choice of either a full refund or an extended warranty. According to Mazda, the chip is programmed for a break period of 10,000 miles, meaning that the 250 hp won't be realized in the car until that break-in period is reached. Mazda had indicated that the reason the 250hp didn't show up on the diagnostics was that the break-in mileage had not been met. An enticing car, and buy, but personally I would wait. "

it'll be 250 HP after the 10,000 mile break in period ? WTF . . . errrr doesn't sound right , can anyone confirm or call this bullshit ,cause I've been thinkin about it and it sounds like complete bullshit :o

I would agree with the BS conclusion. What purpose would it serve to make the car turn 10K miles before it will produce more HP? Just sounds like the usual 'let's stir up some commotion' crowd to me.

It was true on 2nd gen Turbo II RX-7's... not on 1st gen RX-8's.
Do some searching - this is old news big-time.
Not to sound any more **** intentionally (ok, maybe a little intentionally) please use a little taste in your choice of words. This isn't the animal house bulletin board. T'anks.

Look, that was a post by some guy and it was written A LONG TIME AGO, like last november.
There was a buyback because Mazda understated horsepower from 250 to 238, which is what he is referring to. That's it. That's it! The rest is merely speculation that was floating around on THIS BOARD at the time, that after break-in of the engine there might be a horse power increase that would take the engine from 238 to 250. However, there is no support for that at all.
And as things are apparent around here, noone is certain whether this engine is even making 238 HP in its current kit. Who the h**l cares! The car is fast enough and as mazda said, the horse power restatement never altered the speed trials that were quoted with the car. It runs as fast as the magazines said it did when it came out, which everyone at the time seemed a little slow for 250 HP but that was the deal we all boought. The car is what you test drove. The car is what you drive, and if yours is anything like mine, it does just fine.

Amen Haze! Couldn't have said it better myself. People (kidz, mostly) get so obsessed with numbers. Forget about them and enjoy the car. The only number I really care about is the mileage, but that's another thread...

My brother races an RX-7 in SCCA GT2 (NorPac). He's taken the championship a few times. His engine is 13B (non-turbo). He never, never, never wins the races in the straights. Always overtakes in the braking zones, entering the turns and thru the twisty parts, especially later in the race when his competition loses tire grip, especially the "muscle car" types with all that hp & torque. I have a video of him taking a Porsche, it was a long battle - finally took him coming out of the esses, into a hard-braking zone - for the same reason. That Porsche got all squirley and couldn't hold his position any longer. It was great!!

hehe Haze is 100% correct.
they overestimated the HP to 250 but admited that it only produces 238HP. but whats wrong with that?
the drive is still awesome, wouldnt trade it for anything else around its price range.

I think it would make more sense for Mazda to produce a high heat resistant cat that passes federal emissions and restore it back to the original 250 H.P. but hey, that's a pipe dream! Well at least they could offer it for a small fee, but Maurice has one now, so he wins.

The car is obviously fast when your driving it. the lack of low end torque and resulting slow 1/4 mile times lead many to think that the RX-8 has a much lower ouput than claimed. At speed the car will hang with or outright run past many cars that will easily beat it in a drag race.
The cars not the best choice as a drag car, so what. Overall ( although I am a bit biased ) the RX is the best sports cars available in its price range.
