I just sat in a little piece of heaven ;)
Hey guys,
As you can see, I've been a lurker here for quite a while - first time posting!
I just came back from an RX-8 test drive about 20 minutes ago.
Wow. Just. Wow. Blew my mind how insanely awesome it was! And this was an '05 Black 6-speed 30K miles with Nav....perfect (near $16K).
As a 17-year-old who's been driving for a year, I can humbly say that the car (if it can be called that!) is a masterpiece. First off, the dials - they seem to surround you as you sit there. The engine & sound - pure creamy perfection! Gearbox - hearing that "snick" as the shifter changes gears.......Awesome.
The interior - stunning. Honestly, I don't know how you guys get out of your cars
Anyway, back to business - I know mpg's kind of a frowned-upon topic on this forum - but I cannot ignore it. Do I need to fill 91 octane, or is 87 fine? If 87 is all right, then I should be able to realize my dream. With increasing gas prices, 91 octane won't cut it.

Higher octane is better.
I notice on mine a different response and sound when I simply go from mid grade 91 to higher grade. I run 98 octane in mine and I am paying about 50% more for gas over here in OZ than you are there in the US.
If you can't afford the gas then get something else. This is a remarkable automobile but it needs to be feed the right diet, if you need to skimp get something that will better suit.

Yep I know.
I am from the US but live over here in the land of Oz now, so I am familiar with the difference. Your equal is about 5 to 7 points lower than ours since we use the European standard of the pure RON number and the US uses the average of the RON and MON numbers.

Sorry about that...
Haha, sorry 'bout that misunderstanding - I was writing in my post-euphoric RX-8 high
I meant it as 2 separate issues. I was merely curious about the gas octances; the mpg was what worried me. I know, ~$4 at the pump would NEVER affect my decision!
So, how bout it? Benefits outweigh MPG?

91 Octane or above 93 seems to work best in mine, i am a Newbie since the 23rd, did a lot of reading here before purchasing mine, this Forum is the best. We use a similar BUS called Eureka at Xerox with tips and fixes. If you need info or know of a way to do something we share it with all Xeroids worlwide. 87 octane won't cut it, your heaven will feel like a sputtering trip to Hell, even a Newbie i feel the difference cuz they put 87 from the dealership i bought it from, and yes it idles smoother also...

Let's do some maths. The RX8 has about a 13 gallon tank. If you fill it completely once a week, at a $3/gallon mean, that's $39/week. At $3.20 for premium, that's $41.60/week. A difference of $2.60 per fillup, times 52 weeks per year, is a difference of $135.20. If $135.20 is the difference between affording and not affording this car, it isn't for you.

I think everyone has the same general idea here. The mpg on this car is NOT outstanding. If that's an issue for you, then nothing we can say will fix that. Sit down with a calculator and figure out how much it will cost you to drive this car for a year (assume 15mpg to be safe). Then sit down and figure out the cost of driving say a Honda Civic for a year. Subtract to calculate the difference.
There you go! Now all you have to do is decide if this car is worth the extra $$$ per year, and if you can afford it. There's really nothing we can help you with. Glad to hear you really liked the 8 though...although it's not a surprise to us!

look at it this way, The RX8 has the moves and looks of a car in a much higher financial bracket yet costs around $30K. The extra money you spend at the gas station (and you WILL spend, this thing loves to drink but its all worth it) offsets the higher price you'd pay for another vehicle with similar fun/style quotiant. So either look into an Evo/Porsche/BMW for lots more $$$ but (slightly)better gas mileage or the RX8.
Personally, i worked valet for a number of years prior to purchasing my VR '05 6 speed and its hard to think of anything else that i enjoyed as much (except for a 911 of course). basically what im saying is get the car, feed it premium often and keep the oil topped off and nevermind the extra dollars at the pump. Most fun per $4 gallon you can have! I've had mine for over a year and cant stop raving about it. (trouble free too!!!, bet u cant get trouble free with anything german)

dayum... you made the same mistake a lot of us here made. test drove this machine and popped a chubby. in any event, higher is better unless you tune it to run on the lower stuff. stop crying about the gas and just get it. you'll thank yourself every time you shift. i will it.
