This is a very subjective topic but i just want to hear different opinions. So i have a torque gun and i usually use it to remove the lug nuts. When i put them back on i usually tighten them just a bit using the gun then go around manually to tighten them. However, some people say many people over tighten their nuts (LOL). Is the way im doing it okay ?? How do you know its tighten enough or too little How tight are the lugs supposed to be tightened and how do you measure it ?


This is jsut to do a winter to summer tire swap. When i get my new Advan Wheels, it will all be done manually of course so not to scratch them

Sorry for the stupid question but its something ive been doing for a while and it has come to many attention that many people over tighten.

 

Torque wrench, torqued down to 88ft/lbs. Haven't had any issues.

TSB recommended up to 105ft/lbs if you had noise

 

Is it okay to remove the lug nuts using an air gun ?? Then tighten them a bit with the air gun but then FULLY tighten them with a torque gun ?? Just makes the job faster.

 

Torque wrench. Tighten in a criss-cross pattern, in two passes. Halfway first, then the rest of the way on the second pass.

If you insist on using an air gun, make sure it's one made for lug nuts and is adjusted to the proper torque.

Removing with an air gun is OK. Just be careful to not scratch anything.

Thanks !!! The thing is .. its an impact gun not really an air gun. It uses electricity. And you cant really adjust the proper torque. Here are the specs :

Yikes dont use an impact gun, you are going to destroy those lug nuts

whats wrong with putting lug nuts on by hand then torque them down?
what are you racing a F1 car?
putting the lug nuts by hand can greatly reduce the possibility to damage the thread if it was previously damaged (hit by a hammer when taking).

 

LOL Its faster. But i guess youre right i should tighten them manually without risking over tightening them

 

You can either risk breaking off a stud and keep doing it that way. Also using to much torque will stretch the threads on the stud and cause micro fractures. Making them easier to break off in the long run. I run at 94lbs of torque just fine. You need to put them on by hand, your not saving as much time as you think and could cost yourself money. Taking them off its fine.

 

^ Thanks thats all i needed too know . Ill go pick up a torque wrench probably tomorrow. I dont want to use the wrench that comes with the 8 in the trunk.

 

I have an electric Impact wrench and a set of Torque stix. I use the 90 lbs stix with the wrench then a standard torque wrench to get it to the final setting.

 

when I put the lugs back on I do a star pattern and I use a ratcheting socket wrench that just happens to be about a foot long so I apply about half my weight to the end after the second pass around

 

If you're gonna do it by hand, the lug wrench in the trunk sucks. You'll kill yourself with that thing if you don't find an extension for leverage.

 

I just use my trusty one inch impact.



I put it on a low setting.

 

I am apparently the only one using one of those spider lug nut wrenchs(cross shape, 4 possible lug nut sizes). Works great for me to get them on and off. Very fast when you spin it in your hand. Then I use a torque wrench to tighten them all to 100 ft/lbs.

 

I actually have the cross bar, 1/2" impact gun and torque wrench. I'll remove w/ impact or cross bar if I don't feel like turning on the compressor. But I always final torque w/ torque wrench.
