How much oil if I jack up the drivers side? & what about filter???

How much oil will I need after an oil change if I jack up the drivers side of the car like I have heard we should do? I bought 5 quarts..should I get more? Also, how do I change the oil filter? Its the first inverted one I have ever seen. Wont it dump oil all over the engine compartment? And how do I pre fill the new filter so it isnt full of air? Thanx all!

5 is enough.....

Five should be plenty, you won't get much more than four out.
Tipping up the drivers side will help.

There's a great resource on this website for questions like this. The Tech Garage section is filled with with all sorts of helpful information concerning working on your 8. If you'll search the D.I.Y. (do-it-yourself) section in the Tech Garage, you'll find all your answers.
In my experience, I find I have to raise the passenger side of the car in order to access the drain plug. Normal oil changes, done by raising this side of the automobile, require about 4 quarts to refill to full. Removing the oil filter can be difficult the first time. Factory tight filters may require extra force to remove, and the location of the filter doesn't give you much room to work with. You might consider a wrench specifically designed for the job. I also normally poke a small hole in the top of the filter to help the used oil drain out. You'll need to wrap absorbent towels around the base of the filter in order to catch any residual oil that didn't empty from the filter when you remove it from its post.
As far as filling the new filter with oil to so as not to add air to the system, I've never heard of that. It would seem impossible to accomplish on this car. And don't forget the crush washer!
Good luck.

Here's the link to the oil change DIY:
https://www.rx8club.com/series-i-do-yourself-forum-73/diy-rx-8-oil-change-dummies-12455/

Read the entire thread and you will be well prepared to do it yourself.

If you raise the drivers side after removing the drain plug, and you also remove the oil filter after it has drained into the pan, you will need about 5 qts, give or take a few ounces. Not to worry if 5 qts doesn't quite fill it since it will be nearly full and you can drive somewhere to pick up more. But 5 qts should do you just fine.

You will note that there are detailed instructions in the DIY for removing the filter. Unfortunately, the excellent pics that originally accompanied the DIY have disappeared into the either. As JonsToy has said, if this is the first oil change, you might want to have the dealer do it because the factory tends to install the filters very tightly. They can be a bear to remove the first time. After that you can do it yourself and by all means do not over tighten the filter.

If you are removing the filter yourself, loosen it before you remove the drain plug in case you can't get it off you can drive it to the dealer to have it done. If you first drain the pan you would need to add new oil and leave the old filter in place if you couldn't get it off in order to drive the car. (Not sure that is very clear. )

Good luck!

don't worry about filling the filter full of oil, just need to soak the filter element so the oil flow gets going faster, heck, even that's optional.

You can get the oil filter tool (just a socket cap really) on-line from trussville. That will help out a lot.

Also, don't forget to use Jack Stands.
