how much oil do you use?

I've never needed to add as much oil as they said I would.

I'm on my second engine. 2005 model, replaced at 40K, have 57 on it now.

I probably put in a quart between oil changes done every 3K.
I have a very short commute - 4 miles.

I don't push it as hard as I should. Time to start driving to work in 2nd gear.

Do you find oil consumption go up based on how hard you drive it?

It's mostly based on Calculated Load.

There is a Throttle based table but that doesn't start until 60% throttle

I would suspect you Oil Injectors are clogged ... I know I'm always wondering if I'm consuming enough oil. I own a 2005 as well.

Another oil thread...lol

Oil consumption is usually not good with the rx8...mostly everyone here should probably know that by now. If your only driving the rx8 on short commutes and just local driving (like myself), i usually just check my oil level once every 2 weeks or so. When i do check the oil level, just a little bit disappears and i usually don't add any oil until maybe another 2 weeks, then i add whatever oil is needed to fill it up again to normal level.

Oil consumption can vary with a variety of driving habits & conditions, manufacturing variables (OMP base calibration, machining/assembly tolerances), engine wear, engine series (I or II), etc. It can also vary with transmission type, as the A/Ts generally turn lower RPMs than the M/Ts.

I'm not sure one should jump to the conclusion that oil consumption of 1 quart / 3000 miles indicates a problem with the oil metering system. There are too many unknown variables.

Seems like a lot for a Series-II motor, which are supposed to be using less oil overall than the Series-I motors (better oil distribution). Most reports I read here average about 3000 miles per quart for the S-II motors - you appear to be using double that.

That's about what I see. So it's normal. Thanks.

Yeah, Pete, and my 07 6spd auto always seems to use about a quart @ 4k miles, except I can tell its higher on track day, so when I'm working it hard the level on the stick might move 1/8 inch that weekend.

AND, I'm really glad I started premixing after the engine broke in, since the oil metering does seem low even for easy driving.

you sir are wrong.
S2 was meant to solve the S1's lack of lubrication problem hence the 3rd injector and E-OMP.

Mazda first attempted to address the lubrication issue by turning up the OMP rates for the 2 injector system. By adding the middle 3rd injector, there is better distribution of oil, so supposedly less oil should be needed overall.

I am only relating what I have read on these forums, and I believe it was ASH8 who first mentioned this:

My RX-8 never used oil

My 8 never used any oil and I was thinking that was good. Well A month ago I lost the engine. Mazda gave me a new one 94 months after I bought my car. I have 40000 miles on the car.

MD

I bought a 2010 GT in late November 2010. I got an At-A-Glance Auto Record book to keep track of things related to the car.

Looking at it, I have added 7.5 Qts of oil in 10,577 miles (this is with 3 oil changes at the local Mazda dealer.

So that comes out to 1/2 a Qt about every 700 miles.

Most of these miles have been highway, I would estimate, maybe 15% of this is some kind of slower moving traffic. I haven't tracked it yet (just autocross), but I plan on doing a Friday at the track at Summit Point in September.

No, it sounds like high consumption for a S2, but it depends on several factors.

Have you read the other accounts of S2 oil consumption in this topic and others? Most appear to be using a quart every 3000 - 4000 miles.

Same for me. I only recently purchased my '09 GT but have put about 1500 miles on it. I added 1/2 quart after approx 650 miles and changed the oil at 1500 miles. It was about 1/2 quart low at the time I changed the oil.

Normally I won't change the oil that often but it is an '09 that had 6100 miles on it. I wasn't sure how the car would respond to going from barely being driven to becoming a daily driver and wanted to clear out anything that might be floating in the oil.

Here are some pictures taken by the dealership.
