I click it however many times the guy pumping my gas clicks it. In Oregon it is illegal to pump your own gas.

and that's why I will never live there - or any freaky *** state like that. I'm from texas and if anyone tries to pump my gas they will get their *** kicked, NO ONE touches my car but me

But seriously though -- what is the justification for having some high school drop out pump your gas? it's just a financial drain on the service station itself. Are people in oregon just too stupid to pump their own gas and blow things up all the time? (j/k) Unless your state just does not trust average citizens to fuel their own cars?

I would be most worried about "Paco, or Joe" or whatever the hell the guys name is being lazy and not caring about his job (can't blame him) and just swing the gas nozzle around getting gas on my paint, or chipping my paint or something if he was careless.

It might just be an employment opportunity issue...

i usually make it click 3-5 times. I had a problem wit my engine light coming on and i took it to the dealer 3 times.
They said it it was loose cap sensor.
Then some fuel valve thing then once again loose cap.
Finally i took it to a different dealership and i told them about it and they switched out my gas cap and it never had any problems again.

Since we are in the same area. I have a question. When you remove your gas cap and look at the place where the gas pump nozzle goes, what do you see? Unlike all the other cars I have, my 8 just has a hole where the nozzle goes. There is no flap that closes off when you pull the nozzle out. Inquiring minds want to know.

I do it 2 clicks, more than that is useless.

Also I got a CELL the other day, turns out the gas cap was no longer sealing properly (car is now 2 years old) and the dealership replaced it.

they end up being more than you would pay at one of the local vendors.....

some times ebay prices are stupid.... the rear is about 50 bucks shipped from the people that support this site...

on a rare instance you might pick up one here for 40.... i got lucky..

time for a new gas cap?

I have the same exact problem. I can barely turn it and it'll come right off. All my other cars you had to give it a good couple turns before it came off. I've had two CELS because of it, and now I am real paranoid when I put the cap on.

Should I take it to the dealer?

I click it 3-5 times, just depends...

BunnyGirl, I use to live in Oregon many years ago and one of those teenagers who was "qualified" to pump gas didn't fill up the tank all the way. Long story short, I almost ran out of gas because I didn't get nearly as far on the long trip as I normally would. I know, if I ran out of gas that is my own fault.. but still. I am glad I live in a state where I can pump my own gas now..

Why of COURSE we're serious! BTW, I give my gas cap three full turns, then pound nails into it to make sure it's good and tight. No cells yet, but refills are a bitch.

I have a '04 mt that I purchased used with 11,000 miles.
I have had a recurring problem with the CEL.
I have taken it to the dealer 2 times in the 3 months I've owned the car for this problem.
The dealer kept telling me I wasn't tightening the gas cap.
I said ... bull!
I have been driving for 22 years, I think I know how to put on a gas cap.
So I asked for a new cap.

After a few days the light came on again ...GRRRRR!

So I "carefully" checked the cap.
Turns out that the cap is in fact loose.
When I put the cap back on (the new one) it doesn't really tighten up ... no matter how many clicks.
I have tried pushing the cap in gently, hard, very hard while turning ... no help.
The only way I can get the cap to a position where it feels "on" is to tighten to a position right before the click. I have to feel when its about to click and stop.
This is aggravating as hell!

The cap also "seems" to shake loose as I drive.
I will put the cap in a position that feels on, and the next time I fill up it will feel looser.
It's almost like the treads on the fuel pipe are screwed up. WTF!

I am taking the car to the dealer and tell them to either give me a course on gas cap removal and installation or fix it.

In case I can't get this resolved ...
I have heard that the CEL will "self-cancel" after so many driving sessions.
Does anyone know how many driving sessions it takes for the CEL to go off?
Assuming, of course that the cap is securely on.
