If you change at 3000 miles, you need to buy 7 to 8 quarts. The oil change will take 4 quarts, then you will burn an additional 3 or 4 quarts until the next oil change. Figure 1 quart per 850 miles in hot climates.

if you burn 3 to 4 quarts between oil changes, you have a serious problem... :squint:

hmm... by the sounds of some of the 09 threads, they're burning a bit more oil than the older models... also, if you've got a custom map that tweaks the OMP rate, it's very feasible to burn 2-3 quarts in 3000-4000 miles.

04RX8man 08-07-2008 10:14 PM

yeah i agree if your burning 2 or 3 qts in an oil change u have a problem or a leak...i don't care how much you're beating on it you will not use that much if you would your motor cannot burn that much oil if it's being injected that fast.....

04RX8man 08-07-2008 10:14 PM

oh and his/girlfriend's car is an 05 i believe so even if the 09's are burning more then what does it matter his is an 05

nycgps 08-07-2008 10:18 PM

if you do ultra high rpm for a really long time, say, Race? u can burn a quart of oil in as little as 100-200 miles.

but of course. most ppl wont do that.

and 09 naturally will burn more oil cuz it has an extra injector, re-adjusted OMP rate. they're trying to "shine" the "Rotary Engine brand name" you know.

good point... probably rules out a custom map too.

04RX8man 08-07-2008 10:21 PM

yeah and it's an auto so it can really b run at HIGH rpm those are limited in rev's to like 7 or 8k (correct me if i'm wrong it's somewhre there i think)

ShellDude 08-07-2008 10:22 PM

my rev limiter kicks in a heartbeat over 7500 ... and that's with an MM map. I wouldn't want to run my 4AT any higher than that anyway.

04RX8man 08-07-2008 10:45 PM

yeah that's what i though 7.5k is def not pushin near as much oil in as 9.3-9.5K

23000 miles can't be wrong. 1 quart in 1000 miles since the very beginning. Then after MSP16 it goes 1 quart in 850 miles. Done several cross country trips, and without the oil in the trunk I never would have made them successfully.

I changed exactly at 23000 miles this time and have 3 quarts 5w30 on standby. We will see how this goes and I will comment again at 26000 miles guaranteed. I will probably run out of oil and need to get a 4th quart of oil before the next change.

Well if it matters we use between 4-4.5qts running dynos for mazda reman, I just do 4.5 qts since thats what I was told to do there. As for filters as a Z owner I have always heard mobile 1 and k&n are the best but you also pay for it($10 each). Fram went down hill when walmart got there hands on selling them and I have heard wix is good but I never used them. Check the oil often though especially since this is your first oil change, its not bad that it burns oil just the way the motor is designed takes a little oil to keep her going, dont ignore a low oil light ever.

^this guy knows his stuff. haha he should since he works for mazda reman. Yea I typically fill abou 4-4.5 quarts. Mobil 1 oil filter when I can get my hands on it.

I have a 2010 Rx8 I'd say about 1 quart per 1200mi is the average over here in NC climate. I top her off every Sunday and check her pretty often. I also drive my car like I stole it.

I never did my oil change, but every time they always add 5 quarts of oil, because the receipt says 5 quarts all the time. At least a little bit more is better than very less...

This is genius

It is. Shall we nominate it for some sort of nefarious reward?

Does every forum have a monchie?

Same here. The only time I changed oil myself it took a little under four quarts. But I must have done someting wrong for it to come out like that, so I've left it to the dealer ever since.

Adding oil in between oil changes, is one thing I do not miss.

DMaverickRX8 01-30-2014 12:33 PM

Bump. What's the total capacity for a bone dry 4 port engine? I'm putting the top part of my new motor back together Sunday and would like to know.

Thanks :)
