Do you have an owners manual?

Black Sunshine 08-06-2008 04:12 PM

the car was purchased for my girlfriend but the owners manual is in the glove box with her right now. so it is of no help

luis@championsmotorsports 08-06-2008 04:31 PM

oil change

we buy 6 and have some left it save a second trip to the store...

Get the special 5.5 quart jug.

Do the oil change, put around 4 quarts. Run car for a couple of seconds, shut off and check oil stick.

04RX8man 08-06-2008 05:59 PM

depends on which technique you use if you jack up one side of the car(drivers) you can get about 4.5 or 5 qts out if you drive up on rams it's about 4 so buy a 5qt container and put 4 in check and add till full....then whatever is left keep for fill ups in between oil changes

jessedrifter 08-06-2008 06:05 PM

i put 3.7 thts what dealer recommends

Jedi54 08-06-2008 06:13 PM

4 quarts will do it.

Black Sunshine 08-06-2008 06:20 PM

any special type or preference for oil filters?

Jedi54 08-06-2008 06:22 PM

mazda OEM or one from Atkins Rotary.

sorry, i'm new to all this. another question i have on the subject is; driver under normal conditions for the most part, do you have to add oil between 3-5k oil changes?

04RX8man 08-06-2008 09:02 PM

I use FRAM but everyone i know says they are terrible but that's what i use

Just for future reference ( and so you won't get flamed in the future), you can download the owner's manual online from Mazda in PDF form. Even better than the hard copy, since you can search it.

To answer your question:
-Buy 4 quarts of oil. Fill 3 quarts and then fill the last quart until you have what you need.
-Mazda OEM filter, plenty good and relatively cheap (from Rosenthal)

Yes. It varies, but it will be around a quart every couple of thousand miles.

Since there are 1.8 quarts between the high and low marks on the dipstick, you might make it from one change to the other without topping off. But IMHO it's best to not let it get more than a quart down.

Personally, I top off when it's half a quart down. But I enjoy peeking under the hood and the fetish aspect of measuring out half a quart from quart bottles.

Whatever you do, don't start asking about conventional versus synthetic oil.

FRAM!!!!??!?!? Fram is HORRIBLE... cheap and restrictive...:banghead: Heard alot from my instructors and Tech Mentors about how fram fuked up there customers coming back with bits and pieces of the filter stuck and logged in to the oil pump... =/

for your 8's Sake...change to something else... :)

nycgps 08-07-2008 09:14 AM

OE Oil filter will do, I can get them for 4 bucks each cuz Im in their motorsports program. but you can probably get them around 5 bux each. not bad for every couple thousand miles right ?

if you want "better" oil filters, you can try WiX filters. about 6 bux.

K&N has oil filters too (1008 or 1010 will fit, 1010 just taller) and it has a 1" nut top for eas*ier* removal. about 10 bux. up to you.

For oil, 4 quarts is enough. check your oil every 500-1000 miles. you might have to add about .5 or 1 quart. depends on ur driving style.

04RX8man 08-07-2008 10:27 AM

see what i mean....personally I have never had a problem(knock on wood) but with everything I hear from ppl I may start changing my next oil change...Purolator?? Powerflow? (i work at sears so I can get those cheaper) I always used FRAM and everyone in my family has....I guess it was how I was brought up....haha

nycgps 08-07-2008 10:42 AM

FRAM had a problem with their filters couple years ago. Defective Bypass valve design causing it to bypass "almost every day". meaning no oil ever gone thru the filter. Plus of the low quality material that they use, the filter itself actually ripped all apart, which means no filtering.

They redesigned their thing shortly after people "exposed" their design fault. Havent heard anything bad about them since.

I forgot to mention Mobil1 Filter, they have pretty good design, and I think they're only one that use some kind of Synthetic fiber filter in their filters.(most others use paper) they claim their filters can filter more crap than the rest of the people. their filter usually goes for 10-11 bux each. worth it or not its up to you. Check out Autozone, they almost always have some kind of Mobil1 deal.

04RX8man 08-07-2008 06:41 PM

well i have abut 2k more miles maybe ill shop around and see what else filters i can find because i mean fram is like 4 bucks i'm sure at autozone/advance auto etc i can get something that is better....

Autozone running a deal right now, u can get 5 quarts of mobil1 oil /w Mobil1 filter for 26.99 bux.

in case u want to go for this deal, the oil filter size for our engine is M108 (or M110, if u want a higher height filter)

Im thinking of going for this deal. couple months ago I "stock up" on the Castrol Syntec, I probably got like 5 dozens of that. but I'm down to 20 quarts now. cuz I have 4 cars for oil change. CX-7 takes 6 quarts, Altima 5, RX-8 4, Honda Fit 5.

ShellDude 08-07-2008 07:30 PM

Functionally, is there any difference between the M108 and M110?

04RX8man 08-07-2008 07:49 PM

an oil filter functions the same no matter what but a bigger one will always filter more hence being bigger so if i was to do that deal i would go with the tall/bigger one...could not hurt i'll have to check autozone out tomorrwo

User24 08-07-2008 09:09 PM

If you change at 3000 miles, you need to buy 7 to 8 quarts. The oil change will take 4 quarts, then you will burn an additional 3 or 4 quarts until the next oil change. Figure 1 quart per 850 miles in hot climates.
