how do you know.....

......when your clutch is starting to give out?

i'm not sure if it's just me not applying proper amount of force to my clutch, or if it's actually my clutch that is starting to give way. my car only has 22.5k miles on it. while not "brand new", it still should have easily another 40k miles to go before it should be replaced i think. i've seen some of you guys out there already replaced your clutch, and i saw one where the throwout bearing had eaten up the clutch plate.

for those of you who have already replaced your clutch, was it because of failure, or because you wanted to do it?

I replaced my Clutch, Flywheel and Pressure plate because I wanted a faster/stronger grab on the gears. I dont recall many people saying they replaced the clutch because of problems. But I do recall 1 person. But thats it.

There are several threads about failing clutches. Do a search.

Once a clutch is worn out, it will start slipping.

While going at a steady speed, quickly give your car WOT, if you see the RPM needle raise and your car shows a sluggish/no response while the needle itself does move, then your clutch is slipping.

Usually you'll notice a worn clutch when you're trying to accelerate quickly, or when climbing a steep hill. The rpm will shoot up faster than you'd expect from the speed of the car. That is, the engine is going faster than the drivetrain because the clutch is slipping. Once that starts it isn't long before it will be slipping even on a flat road at steady speed.

what does WOT mean? i see that being said all over the place, and still don't know what it means .

so, my clutch isn't slipping then . what about the gears not going in smoothly? namely 2nd and 5th gear. sometimes when i go to shift, the gears won't go in all the way and my gear box starts to grind. i take it, that's just user error then huh? lol

WOT = Wide Open Throttle = Pedal pressed all the way down as far as it will go

xrider01, people use a LOT of abbreviations around here (too many, if you ask me). It turns out, there's a really useful list defining them, which, unfortunately is hidden away down in the basement in an unused lavatory behind a sign saying "Beware the Leopard". You have to go to this forum (RX-8 Discussion), then at the top, ahead of the threads, there's a list of sub-forums, one of which is "The RX-8 FAQ", and then *next to that* you can click on "Faq - Update". which is a thread, and then the second post in that thread is a most excellent cryptic-abbreviation rosetta stone.

I have been complaining since I got here that that stuff is too hard to find.

I lowered my floor, so my car will go WOT more than yours just kidding.

You will notice it in higher gears at first, more load in the higher gears...as other have said its when you go WOT or put a lot of load on the motor, driving up a steep road, ect.

and OEM clutch in a stock car (with little to no abuse) should last at least half the life of the car, My friend has a stock MX6 with a stock clutch in it, around 160k miles on the clock now.
