I'm not 100% sure if mine is disconnected or broken, but it definitely looks broken, as there's the plastic damper is hanging there, and definietely looks like it snapped. I played it safe, and demanded they have the part there when I take it in, so it's guaranteed to be fixed.

I must say, that I was realy botherd when reading this. I just had my air bag recall done, and had'nt checked to see if it still worked. After finishing reading this, I whent out and checked. Lucky me Mines not broken. I have to say...Power Mazda in Salem, is 2 for 2 with me. I'm pretty happy it was'nt broken. CJ

Smart. I've done all my oil changes myself. When they were doing my recalls I let them do the 15K service. Big mistake. The tech dumped the oil out of the filter all over the engine and front suspension subframe. My car now reeks of oil at stoplights. Really pissed me off, that one. It actually gets sucked in through the vents and makes you want to gag.

What does your invoice say?

I confirmed with the front desk guy that both recalls were performed but my invoice says...

"Perform short harness recall" ... It took about 1.5 hours to complete.

Perhaps I'll start a new thread.

Nevermind I answerd my own question... the short harness is part of the airbag recall. And even though my car falll just within the VIN for the manual transmission recall, mine apparently was not one of the effected cars.

Grrr..my stay damper is definitely screwed. Needs to go in Tuesday for something else anyway, so I'll get them then.

I work at a dealer and found that I could not deliver the RX-8 until the recall was performed. It is a huge fine if a dealer delivers a car or test drives a car with a known recall in effect.

Your recall work should work out without any hang-ups. The only downfall is going without your RX-8!!!!!

or having them break your stay damper and not telling you. That sound like another "little" downfall

They messed my damper up and the word from Mazda is oil in the air box is normal.

On the possitive side, all the techs LOVED my exhaust! :p

My airbag work was apparently done without incident. In fact, I can find nothing to suggest any work was done at all. The invoice suggests that they thought they were doing two recalls, then realized their mistake:

Job #1 36SUZ
1604B Install air bage side harness, Part FEY0-67-SHO, Warranty

Job #2 36SUH87JCRUZ Safety Campaign
Perform Open Campaign
Only 1 Open Campaign on this Vehicle at this time... $0.00

Anyone have any information on the second job number?

I asked for the L reflash and was told it would cost $90

L reflash only showed a $20 charge on my invoice.

Don't ask for it, do what I did.

Tell em your wife flooded the car, but you were able to restart it using the method in the manual, then say you read a brand new TSB saying that "latest PCM update was a step" and wondered if it would help avoid that situation in the future.

Also I went off on low gas mileage and running rough at idle and a bunch of other things that might steer them towards an ECU update... being totally innocent and nice the entire time ( I was ready to be the bad guy, fortunatly, the situation did not warrant that ).

The invoice shows how much it costs the dealer, I didn't pay anything for the recall either and that was also listed on the invoice.

Showed my dealer the TSB from Rosenthal about the Engine Cranks/No Start and told them sometimes my 8 doesn't want to start (sometimes I have to crank it for awhile) and they did the L reflash without any questions. Had both recalls, oil pan and eng grommets done also with no problems. If you are getting charged for the reflash they are ripping you off. It should be covered under warranty. My glovebox is fine also.
After reading this thread I must say thanks to Herb Easley Mazda for a job well done.

My airbag recall was done with no problems. No damage to the glove box stop damper; it still comes slowly down with no problem. They changed my oil for $24.95, washed and detailed my car inside and out, and I had some dings taken out by the Dent-Pro guy on-site. (I paid for those, of course but the guy did such a good job you absolutely cannot tell where they were.)

my car is currently at the dealer getting the stay damper replaced. i also asked if they'd do the reflash and they said no prob. i'll report back if there are any issues.

Getting the recall work done today.

Because of the warnings posted on this forum (thank you) I anticipated the damper problem. I printed the recall instructions and placed the page indicating the glove box procedure (with the warnings highlighted) in the glove box.

You guessed it; they broke the damper anyway. The service rep (128 Mazda) actually tried to convince me that it was previously broken. How dumb are these people?

They said they would take the part from another RX-8 and fix it right away.

I can’t wait to see what surprises await when I pick-up the car tonight.

this doesn't sound right. If you are in the VIN range, then you are in the VIN range. Doesn't matter if you're "just within" or what. You should get the trannie recall; it's a safety issue.

I had both done, along with the L flash which cost me nothing. I gave 'em the story "it is running rough" and they looked into it, then gave me the upgrade.

The two recalls and reflash just took a few hours.

I had my recall work done Monday at 128 Mazda. I had no problems. I checked and the damper was fine. Do you know who the actual tech was? Mine was an older guy named Ray. I made sure I talked to him directly. He seemed very knowlegable.

He also mentioned that the Heat shield recall was done without touching the interior parts around the shifter. They have found a way to work around that. This came as somewhat a relief because I was sure someone was going to scratch something...

I also live in MA, bought my 8 from Ira and usually take it there. I am getting the airbag recall done on teh 7th but told them I didn't want the damper done because they hadn't heard of the procedure to do it without taking the whole interior apart. Who can I talk to at 128 to make sure they can do it without taking it all apart. I will take it there if they can do that. Heck, maybe they'll give me the L flash.

Hey Justin....

128 started doing the dynamic damper heat shield recall just as the recall stated, taking the trim around the shfter apart.

I had a chance tp speak with the actual tech Ray. He told me taking the interior parts off make a couple of the bolts easier to get to but was not required. He does this recall without touching the interior.
What I dont know is if Ray is the only one doing it this way or if they all are. I would assume once 1 tech sais "hey....you dont even need to take that stuff off..." they all will follow suit. After all, speed is were a service dept makes their money.

The funny thing is...all of the damage reported by people regarding these recalls revolves around the small "damper" that the glove box uses to open gracefuly. This part is either broken or not re-attatched after completeion of the airbag recall.

As far as the "L" flash goes. I had a CEL when I brough the var in for service. They checked the code and it was for a gas cap. This was a legitamate loose gas cap because I checked it when the CEL lit up and sure enough......loose gas cap...oops.

They cleared the codes. I was hoping that the scan tool procedure they used would give me the update. No dice. No "L" flash. Although I never specifically asked for it.

Got mine done today, going back to get glove box damper fixed tomorrow. They gave my wife a brand new loner today, and through in the oil change that was not due. So I guess you win some and you lose some.

Thanks Gyro, appreciate the info. I might give Ray at 128 a call to discuss. I'm not giving many thumbs up to Ira at this point, they seem to be way out of the loop when it comes to these things.

After all of this talk about the glove box "damper" damage from the dealer after recall work, I had to see what part was affected.

Here is a pic of the damper that needs to be disconnected in order for the glove box to be fully lowered for recall work.

My question is......is the dealer actually breaking this part, or failing to re connect it?

For those new to this subject...do not confuse the glove box damper (see pic) and the Dynmanic damper heat shield, which is also the subject of a seperate recall.

I went in for both recalls, the damper and the airbag wire.
It took thenm only around 15 minutes to replace, plus fixed my complaint of the windshield washer spray (loose wire connection).
no scratch or damage by the tech guy, except for the dirty marks on the glove box. By the way the glove box damper function as normal.

There are a few numbers onthe Invoice that bothers me tho. The box for the del date say 16sep2003 and the warr.exp box say 16sep2006. Shoulnt the warr.exp date be in the 2007 for everyone except those got the extended warr.
Should I comfront my dealer about me only getting 3 years warr. or you its just a typo.
