The OEM thermal pad doesn't help much at all. Search "cup holder diy" for my solution to the problem.

i keep my cigarette lighter there, and after driving for a while and picking it up, its hot as hell, worried that one day it may get a bit too hot and create quite a mess in the console

don't think dealers do anything about this because techincally, there is nothing wrong. if you bought the heat shielding, you might be able to take that to them and get them to install it, but the dealer most likely only has the stock heat shielding.
but if you really want to know, call your dealer, because some dealers offer different, non-standard services that other dealers don't. if they can do anything about it, they'd be the ones to know. also, i wouldn't expect that this would be covered under warranty, so parts and labor would be charged.

Basically stuff that Mazda sends out to tell the dealer how to fix the fun little things that could go wrong with your car.

2. never heard about an official fix from mazda about the hot-plate-like cup holders.
me never having heard of either of these doesn't really mean a whole lot though, since i have no insider connections...
have you tried going to a different dealer?

I heard about this being a fix but haven't found anything written by Mazda for it. I've pulled my center console apart before and there's no padding underneith the center console, no wonder it's so hot

you can always use it as a food warmer. http://www.homefocuscatalog.com/prod...&dept%5Fid=400 . The cupholder can also fit a breakfast sandwich nicely. seriosly, I just cut a some piece of foam and it doesn't heat up as much.
