SO, I'm trying to program my homelink for my garage with the homelink button and I've got to say that these instructions suck.

Anyone have any pointers?

Also, there are 2 other homelink buttons, what whould they be good for other than other garage doors? anyone use them for anything else?

 

The homelink is very flexible. I use it for the security gate at work which is older and is fixed code. For this type you use an existing remote to let the homelink learn from it. (you hold the remote near the mirror and push the button)

The other two buttons I use for my two garage doors at home which are newer and are rolling code. Programming for those is easy. You push the learning button on the garage door opener, then push the homelink button you want to use.

 

I second the comment that the instructions suck. I have had a whole team of professionals attempting to sync my homelink (well, me and a friend of mine that has one in his car) and have got nada. I can get the light to flash on the garage door motor while syncing, but nothing else. I gave up on this a year ago, but if someone has anything insightful to add, I would appretiate it.

 

go to homelinks site, the instructions from them direct is fairly good.

I called homlink because I was having the same issue with my 'trained professionals'. They told me I had to do it TWICE in order for my car to learn the code.

1)push button on garage door
2)hold down button inside car
3)push button on garage door- AGAIN
4)hold down button inside car
5)test button...should open door.

I've programmed quite a few homelink systems in the past few years and I find the Mazda directions no different than the directions in other manufacturers vehicles. I don't meen to sound like an *** but I've figured out every homelink system on my first try....

....I guess if you don't have a 4th grade reading level it could prove to be difficult

 

I got it on my first try too, perhaps it varies a lot with different systems.

 

Yeah, i dont have a 4th grade reading level. Maybe that is my problem.

And, dont worry, you dont sound like an ***. But I bet you smell like a pig. What is it that you do up there in Lake Oswego anyway? I would guess it is a pretty crappy job, given your handle.

As a note, I found that little drawer to the left of the steering wheel just above the trunk lid opener to be the perfect place for the little keychain garage door remote that genie gives you when you buy their unit.

Are you sure your garage door doesnt have a learning button? I bet it does. This button isn't on your remote, its up on the motor unit of the garage door. Go take a look and I bet you find one, they are usually near the light.

 

Yeah, I tried the whole routine multiple times. I did it the way the manual says, I did it the way our dodge manual says (which is different in the details but works for a Stratus) I did it the way you assign to remote units. None of them worked for the 8. Everything other unit that has been tried worked (first try all). All in all I prob. tried 15 times before giving up. The best I could get was the learn light on the motor unit blinked when I pushed the homelink button in the 8. I gave up since I had a remote that worked and I dont park in the garage daily.

And yes the motor unit has a learn button. Dont all the new rotating code units have a learn button?

 

I had the same problem - no use for the other two buttons. So I programmed all three buttons to work my garage door opener. Now I don't have to fumble around in the dark finding the right button (cause Mazda didn't backlight them - or the overhead console - but that's another post). I just reach up and hit any button on the left side of the mirrror and the door opens.

 

I would assume all newer models have the learning button. Have you tried programming your homelink with someone elses garage? If it doesnt work on someone elses garage then maybe there is something wrong with your homelink unit.... hell, take it to the dealer and have them check it out, I'm sure a dealer could test it out on one of their garage doors.

 

Carbon, I had the same problem. It depends on your garage door unit. However, this is how I program mine, and I think it should work with yours. Follow this:

1 - Delete all programs on your homelink by holding both the 1st and 3rd button until it flashes (10 seconds or so).

2 - Hold your garage door opener close to the homelink, and at the same time, push the homelink button you want to program (1-3), and the garage door opener until it flashes (5 seconds or so).

3 - Climb onto a ladder to reach your garage door unit, and press the learn button, then quickly get off the ladder and into your car and press the SAME homelink button you just program until it flashes (5 seconds or so).

This should work. Keep in mind that when I said "flashes" it will be whatever your user manual says about it. Either way, this SHOULD work..I had a b*tch setting mine up until I ended up calling Homelink and saying, "What the hell???" ^_^

 

Yup, those are the exact directions. But keep in mind there is a time limit to the third step, it has to be done in less than 30 seconds, which should be plenty of time.

 

I think maybe my problem is that my garage door opener is not the original?

 

I'm not sure if that matters. If it can open the door its sending out a signal, and if its sending a signal then homelink should be able to recieve that signal.

 

Well I appreciate the help. When I get home I'm going to try and I'll let you know what happens, if anything.

 

I've tried programming it.. rolling garage opener... but once I get the homelink to work, my existing garage opener wont work. Anyone else has this problem?
