I'm about 200 miles away from 70k original engine and have no problems yet :)

ZoomZoomH 04-12-2009 09:12 PM

crossed over 90,000 miles last week, and just changed oil yesterday, gonna try to get the coolant flushed soon...

ZoomZoomH 04-12-2009 09:13 PM

and yes everything runs as good as the day it rolled off the showroom :icon_tup:

Good to see lots of 8's getting up to the 100k mile mark once again the 8 impresses me. Hope mine will do the same.

04 @ 53k

Shinka-RX-8 04-14-2009 04:36 PM

Thank you for sharing this information. I become more and more confident about buying this car because there is not such problems with engine as they are stated in many other forums.

exsequor 04-14-2009 08:11 PM

74k miles on original engine. Have no idea how it was broken in as I bought the car at 20k miles.

cornholio135 04-16-2009 02:24 PM

Just rolled 95k miles... engine was replaced at 47k miles... still runs strong... no premix... castrol 5w30 non synthetic...redline regularly... BG44k every other month...replaced coils and wires at 75k...replace plugs twice a year...

Zoom~Zoom...

exsequor 04-16-2009 02:42 PM

I'm kinda scared to creep towards 100k lol..
I know my engine will last beyond 100k..the question is how long..

Renesis07 04-16-2009 09:50 PM

the engine will last as long as you maintain it. It will need a rebuild somewhere between 100-175K, most engines do. It is what it is, just enjoy the car and solve problems as they surface.

All of this thread because the "service advisor" at some Mazda dealer bad mouthed a RX-8? :)

I've worked at a dealership before. Most (notice I said most) service advisors have a little car knowledge and are not educated people. Most make a below average income. They're not "experts" despite what their customers may think. Their role is half customer service, half sales. They are paid based on the work that they sell. Obviously with a system like that some work will be necessary, some will not.

Even most mechanics/technitions, etc. are not exceedingly technical people. They know how to do their jobs, etc. and they know what they've seen, etc. but again, they have a certain type of knowledge. If they say something it may have some weight, but sometimes just like anyone else, it may exceed their level of expertise and it's more opinion than fact. The perfect technition would be an a mechanic who is strong with "hands on" thinking and has an analytical mind suited to acedemic thought. Based on my experience I don't think many of those people exist in dealerships. :)

I have just shy of 42K on my 2005. Very under-driven and I won't be driving it much in 2 months (basic training and A school). By 2010 I'll have less than 43K miles. Hoping to get boosted before 50K. I do regular maintenance on my car (I'll pop the hood when I'm bored sometimes) but I have taken short trips (work is ~2.5 miles away). People tell me I'm going to flood my car and I think its bullshit. How exactly does one "flood" an engine with a pressurized digital fuel system?

Fuel is sitting in the chamber, wears down the oil on the seals creating compression/soaks the spark plugs to give a weaker spark = a very difficult to start motor.

I've never flooded my car, but I've flooded many a-7s.

Pink Flea 05-07-2009 12:31 AM

I am at 127K now with my original engine :) Flea is such a good girl!!

Edit: Mine is an 04 btw.

always.anthony 05-07-2009 01:52 AM

****can we get background info?****

oil used.
how often changed.
driving habits.
premix or not.

etc...

so we can pick up on what good trends are and what bad trends are so we know what to follow and avoid?...not to pick on cornholio135 but he had his rebuilt, and hes using dino and no premix.

Pink Flea 05-07-2009 08:07 PM

I use Royal purple
Change it every 3K.. (if I remember)
I have 32 speeding tickets if thats any indication on my driving habits, I also autocross it.
and I use petit racing premix.

shazy 05-07-2009 08:21 PM

WTF?! PLZ dont tell me it's all on your Rx-8!

Pink Flea 05-07-2009 08:27 PM

Which part? The tickets? No, I get those in other cars as well.. Ive had maybe half of them in the 8.

shazy 05-07-2009 08:30 PM

Dayum... you gotta control yourself there :P

Oh and I have 26k miles on my 04... I feel the smallest right now. (that sounded wrong didn't it?)

Pink Flea 05-07-2009 08:32 PM

Yeah, I have been good lately. I havent had a ticket in over a year now! Having a kid make you calm down alot.

endowdly 05-07-2009 09:19 PM

I have 57k Miles right now.

Very strong compression still. I can pass my buddy's brand spanking new (stock) 40th anniversary rather handily. I drive it like I'm autocrossing all of the time when I can find space.

Idemitsu Premix.
10w30 Royal Purple in summer, 5w30 in winter.
