Highest Mileage RX-8

I hate to start a new thread but I DID do a search and didn't see any applicable results.

Anyway, the other day I was making an appointment for a normal servicing and my trusty dealer asked how many miles I had on my 2004. I, being the incredibly honest person that I am, answered 59,925 miles. His retort was 'Nobody has 60,000 miles on their RX-8.' Well, I almost do (by tomorrow I will have 60K as it is 26 miles one-way to work for me).

So here is my question: Who has the most miles on their RX? And that means on their ORIGINAL engine...which is what mine has.

59,964 miles right now on my 2004.

Dumi 06-25-2007 07:16 PM

I think I saw someone with 111,XXX.

Renesis07 06-25-2007 08:42 PM

I work at a mazda dealership, a dude came in an 05 with 134,XXX miles. And my 2004 is at 48K, so im right there with you, tell your dealer to suck it.

expo1 06-25-2007 09:32 PM

As far as this board https://www.rx8club.com/members/lambertrx8-4339/ has the most miles ( I Think) over 128,000. I have 95,000 miles on mine and all is still well.

Lizzy 06-25-2007 10:11 PM

Mine has 60,000, it's an original 2004. How's your engine doing?

bruce_van 06-25-2007 10:34 PM

128,000 ?!?!?!

That's nuts!

Well I hope thats not too nuts, I'm hoping my 8 lasts well into 150,000. My daily driver has 180,000 and still runs strong BUT its a camry. :Eyecrazy:

chickenwafer 06-26-2007 12:14 AM

mine is at 43,xxx miles now, it's an '05. I plan on doing a compression test around 75,000 miles and see if I need a rebuild. If not, I'll keep doing a compression test every 5,000 miles until I determine i need one. My goal is to get to 100,000 miles before needing a rebuild

RotaryResurrection 06-26-2007 01:18 AM

About to hit 112k. I figured that would be the record...damn that guy with 128k must have bought a demo car!

Seems to be doing ok although I am concerned about some vibration while idling. It gets much worse if I am running the A/C. So far I have had no major mechanical malfunctions - but I always keep my fingers crossed while driving. :)

This upcoming trip to the dealer should be interesting.

Raven0207 06-26-2007 09:31 AM

I'm at 43,XXX in my 05 8 but I have 2 really long road trips planned so that number will just get higher.

eviltwinkie 06-26-2007 10:25 AM

strangely enough...at 28k the engine feels stronger and better than ever before...

rotaries age like fine wine when properly maintained...

ZoomZoomH 06-26-2007 11:33 AM

59,200 miles as of this morning

should reach 120k in another couple years :)

½mv² 06-26-2007 12:33 PM

I'm just about to hit the 71,000 mark, and she runs like a damn formula car.

I go through 4 tires every 10,000 miles, taking every turn like there's a finish line around it.
I redline at LEAST twice a day, sometimes holding it there... just because I can... and the scream of a rotary at 9500rpm is orgasmic.
I change the oil every 3000miles, no matter what.
I run only premium.
I never make "short trips."
I always drive 10-25mph over the speed limit... sometimes more...

Aside from tires & brakes, the only other things that I've ever have replaced on that car is the spark plugs/wires, and the sunroof (FYI: attemping to close the sunroof at 110mph is hazardous to its health)
No marbles, no pinging, no shaking at idle, no squeaks, no grinds, no power loss.

My signature speaks the truth!

dmorales 06-28-2007 10:33 AM

NICE! lol

61,113 as of this morning.

36 miles one way to work for me. Plus all my extra driving. I average almost 100 miles a day. It's a fun car, but not in traffic.

I was worried a little, because I still have a couple years of payments, but not so much since I bought an extended warranty. <- that's a good mod...sort of...

35800 (ok, on the low side), and I'm running long and strong.

Oh, the the car is fine too ...

licid222 06-28-2007 02:50 PM

I've got 54k miles on mine. Got it December 2005 with 2k miles on it so that's about 2,700 miles/month.

2nd set of tires, about to be 3rd. Only problems ever were known issues with water in rear light, pop up center console button, and ignition coils going at about 45k miles. All easy fixes and no returning problems.

I hope to get 150k miles out of this car. Too much fun to drive.

Leesha 06-28-2007 08:27 PM

I've got 2,780 hoping to get 100x that!:)

cleoent 06-28-2007 10:03 PM

Just an FYI OP, but this has been discussed. I believe the thread was something "highest mileage rx8" as well :)

Droptop13B 06-29-2007 07:28 PM

There's a yellow '04 GT 6-Speed for sale in my area right now with 98K on it, guy says the motor is original and runs great.

42500, 05' 8, no problems what so ever and just the other day i got 307 miles to the tank, i started locking cruise at 60 n i was amazed cuz i usually only get 260 to a tank, wonders what cruise control can do for ur car. That about 23 mpg, so im wonderin if i can break 24....

Q121825 07-01-2007 12:08 PM

I have 96,000+ with no real issues. Had to have the PCM reflashed once after a battery failure mid-start. Even the dealer couldn't start it without a PCM reflash.

I expect to get 200,000+ out of it.

z00m-z00m 07-03-2007 06:43 PM

109,222 miles.
Third Engine, Needs new Tranny, Replaced Cat.convertr....

z00m-z00m 03-03-2008 06:01 PM

131,111 miles.

Leesha 03-03-2008 06:01 PM

Amazing...soon I will be there ...maybe 10 more years... :) I average 15,000/year so yeah... will get there sooner than 10 years I guess... :)

Katchoo 03-04-2008 05:54 PM

Whoa! Too much mileage! Just passed 70K on the original engine.

HottRodder 03-04-2008 06:35 PM

124,199. It's be more but I haven't the daily 90+ since November and it's been out of commision with ECU/OMP issues of late.

04RX8man 03-06-2008 01:36 PM

04' with 26,700 on it. Tranny rebuild due to an explded input bearing under warranty. Low number but can't drive it here in PA for about 4 months out of the year. Hoping to get at least 100,000 out of it if not 200,000

wisconsinben 03-06-2008 02:37 PM

Original engine just spun me passed 75,000 miles. At 20,000/year I should see 100k next summer!

jtmhjh 03-06-2008 05:41 PM

I'm new to rotary engines. Are you guys suggesting that I shouldn't get more than 60,000 miles out of my $35,000 car without buying a new engine?

If you are a numbnuts that can not take care of anything in life . .. expect less than 100,000

My last rotary engine had WELL over 225,000 when I sold it. All original, never rebuilt. (13b)

Yes. At 60,001 miles, your engine will explode violently, sending rotary shrapnel into your passenger compartment, which will imbed itself into your medulla oblongata.

As a precautionary measure, you should begin wearing one of these at around the 55k mile mark when driving:

jtmhjh 03-07-2008 06:51 AM

Sweet!

I'll try not to be a numbnut.

RotaryResurrection 03-07-2008 12:01 PM

The bigger question is why you paid 35G's for an 8? If that is the case, then I think you've already surpassed the numbnut stage so the discussion is moot. :)

Yeah, I rounded up.

Stickered at 34,700. After trade and haggling, somewhere around 26,000.

I presume you have a '04 or '05, there was an issue on the early cars with the engine mounts cracking, make sure that fix was done. This vibration, especially with the AC, is a primary symptom of that problem.

matthew121 03-08-2008 06:55 AM

there is one here in town at a lot, 2004 with 75,000

kersh4w 03-08-2008 09:32 AM

Congrats, smitty.

Post in the 100k mile thread, and tell everyone about the maintenance schedule you adhered to, what type of oil, filters, coolant flush/fill intervals, etc.

Renesis07 04-12-2009 11:24 AM

Im about to roll over to 74K. This is my last year using the 8 as a DD. Im buying a second car, more than likely an NA FC for a DD and going to park the 8 to give it a rest. I still have 2.5 years of payments so Id like to OWN my 8 with under 100K

Dallas8 04-12-2009 03:01 PM

Just passed 115,000 miles on the original engine. Paid $900 for decarboning, new coils and plugs at 65,000 miles. Pilot bearing melted later; this cost me $2400 for the transmission to be rebuilt. I just paid another $2400 for the HID lights to be replaced, due to fogging. Tail lights have been replaced under warrantee for water leaks.

This has been an expensive car, but I know now to use top tier fuel. It still runs well.

mryoshi 04-12-2009 03:51 PM

I'm hoping my 05 with 40K miles will last a while... as I got a 60 month loan. I am religous about maintenance though, and always run premium gas.
Hopefully wont be a dialy driver for more than 3 years though (looking at one of the new tesla S sedans for commuting... if things go as planned). I have a 60 mile commute roundtrip 50/50 city highway.
