Thank you for sharing this information. I become more and more confident about buying this car because there is not such problems with engine as they are stated in many other forums.

74k miles on original engine. Have no idea how it was broken in as I bought the car at 20k miles.

the engine will last as long as you maintain it. It will need a rebuild somewhere between 100-175K, most engines do. It is what it is, just enjoy the car and solve problems as they surface.

All of this thread because the "service advisor" at some Mazda dealer bad mouthed a RX-8?

I've worked at a dealership before. Most (notice I said most) service advisors have a little car knowledge and are not educated people. Most make a below average income. They're not "experts" despite what their customers may think. Their role is half customer service, half sales. They are paid based on the work that they sell. Obviously with a system like that some work will be necessary, some will not.

Even most mechanics/technitions, etc. are not exceedingly technical people. They know how to do their jobs, etc. and they know what they've seen, etc. but again, they have a certain type of knowledge. If they say something it may have some weight, but sometimes just like anyone else, it may exceed their level of expertise and it's more opinion than fact. The perfect technition would be an a mechanic who is strong with "hands on" thinking and has an analytical mind suited to acedemic thought. Based on my experience I don't think many of those people exist in dealerships.

I have just shy of 42K on my 2005. Very under-driven and I won't be driving it much in 2 months (basic training and A school). By 2010 I'll have less than 43K miles. Hoping to get boosted before 50K. I do regular maintenance on my car (I'll pop the hood when I'm bored sometimes) but I have taken short trips (work is ~2.5 miles away). People tell me I'm going to flood my car and I think its bullshit. How exactly does one "flood" an engine with a pressurized digital fuel system?

Fuel is sitting in the chamber, wears down the oil on the seals creating compression/soaks the spark plugs to give a weaker spark = a very difficult to start motor.

I've never flooded my car, but I've flooded many a-7s.

****can we get background info?****

oil used.
how often changed.
driving habits.
premix or not.

etc...

so we can pick up on what good trends are and what bad trends are so we know what to follow and avoid?...not to pick on cornholio135 but he had his rebuilt, and hes using dino and no premix.

I have 57k Miles right now.

Very strong compression still. I can pass my buddy's brand spanking new (stock) 40th anniversary rather handily. I drive it like I'm autocrossing all of the time when I can find space.

Idemitsu Premix.
10w30 Royal Purple in summer, 5w30 in winter.
