High speed Trial - Impressions

Well I finally decided that my RX-8 was broken in, having put a few thousand kilometers on it.

So I went up to my traditional "speed lane", a 19 kilometer stretch of highway that is straight, relatively flat, and (most importantly) completely free of RCMP. Also, there are fields on each side, as opposed to brush - no surprise ungulate collisions in store.

The first stretch of the highway is older, and it sees logging vehicles periodically, so it's not as smooth as it once was. I took it up to 205km/h on that stretch. I wasn't very fond of the way that it skittered a bit on that surface, so that was my limit.

The second half was much newer, and much smoother. I managed to hit 225, and perhaps I could have gone slightly faster, but it would have taken a while to do so.

Don't ask how much gasoline was used during this little excursion - you all know better.

The vehicle remained smooth at these speeds. No shudder or shake. It pulled very well up through 160 km/h, slacking off after that, but it didn't really start to lose its oomph until 200, where it seemed to drop dramatically.

I'll do this again once every year or two, on that same stretch of safe road. Day to day I'm a safe driver, albeit a spirited one.

so,

How many mph is all that.
Drive safe and lookout for road debris at those speeds.

Rounded off:

19 K stretch = 12 Mi.

160 KPH = 100 MPH
200 KPH = 124 MPH
205 KPH = 127 MPH
225 KPH = 140 MPH

Absolutely.

I actually drive it one way normally to check for exactly that - road debris. Then hit the higher speed on the way back.

I have a need for speed, but I have a greater need for not dying.

What kind of tracking events do you have in your area? We do a lot of HPDE events at road race courses with groups like NASA, SCCA, BMWCCA, Panoz and such. We have even rented out a track one time. I think we will be doing that again. This is the best way to really get your car out and enjoy it safely for what it was designed to do, handle. Then you get to do the twisties, brake like a mad man, speed down the straights and have a blast. You also get to compare your 8 with other cars and see how you stack up. You should strongly consider this instead of taking it to the street.

the top speed of the car is 240 kph so you weren't going much below the absolute top speed. Go any faster and your tires would disintegrate since they're not rated to go faster, usually makes me question those ppl that go and get Z rated tires on their 8, you'll never have a use for them...

The Bugatti Veyron at top speed, 253mph, will empty its tank in around 12 minutes.

I wonder how long it will take for the RX8 to empty its tank at top speed around around 150mph.

Anyone have a guess?

BTW, seriously, what kind of gas mileage did you get for your speed runs?

You must not know what the speed ratings on tires mean; a V-rated tire can ride at a sustained 149 mph for 24 hours straight. I would hardly worry about disintegration- we're not talking about 190 mph, afterall.

back when I baught my car I found a very open section (comming back from vegas) and hit 142. I was trying to see if there was a gov. after hitting 142 I decided there was no gov and let off. about a week later I read on this thread that it is 148. I was so close.

car was smooth as glass at those speeds. and no I will not do it again, as it is a really stupid thing to do.

I really don't know. The tank was partially depleted before I started. But I put a LOT more gas into that tank than I expected when I filled up. Single digit mileage for sure.

I hate cars that control your top speed... Why is there a gov here in the US?

Cool!! How fast did you get it to... low 150s, high 150s....
Do you know up to how fast will it go to????
I thought I saw a video out there on the internet where they had a MT Rx8 on a dyno redlining in 6th gear @ 187mph.... .Could this be true???

Some have had there car a little over 150 on the road. The 187 mph speed was on a dyno. Wind resistance and rolling resistance from the front wheel didn't have an effect on that reading.

So this is funny.... you can post threads of going at very dangerous speeds but no threads about street-racing.... kills...

I'm trying to figure out where my car stands with the rest of cars out there..... That's why i'm interested in kill stories out there...

But oh well.... I guess those are the rules of the forum....

This thread is about using a high-visibility straight 19km stretch of good, deserted highway with fields on either side to test the speed with caution taken for road conditions.

There's a difference.
