Hey I Just Got 31mpg!!?!

I just broke 1000miles in my 8 and on this last tank, I got a whopping 31mpg. And surprisingly enough 40% of the driving was done in NJ Turnpike traffic.

So what makes me so special?
I don't know. These are my variables.

1) 93 octane Shell Gas
2) The other 60% of driving that wasn't in traffic on the Turnpike was done cruising at 60-80 mph
3) I don't have a ***** foot if I recall right I hit the redline 8 times in 2nd and 3 times in 3rd on this tank.
4) Shifts are at 5000-7000 normally
5) 50% of the driving was done in rain
6) I have gotten 17mpg 19mpg 20mpg and 22mpg previously not in that order.

That’s about all I can think of feel free to ask me any questions.

On a side note while on the NJ Turnpike I saw another 8, we were both hauling *** 80mph+. He was in the "Cars Only" lanes I was in the "Cars and Trucks" anyone from here?

I get my best gas mileage going over 80- my husband managed to get almost 165 miles with the gas gauge still 1 notch above half-way this weekend, and that was cruising about 85 the entire way. Maybe your car just really likes you?

Are you sure the tank topped off when you filled up? Maybe the fillpipe backed up and the nozzle tripped before the tank was full. This sounds like one of those things that seems too good to be true, therefore...

I'm goin' with freaky. Post your next fill-up levels. If it wasn't totally filled at the station then the next mileage should be equally abysmal. Of course, I am hoping that that was your honest mileage. Glad that you like the car so much!

wait so you drove it 285.3 miles and then filled her up without depleting the tank?

I was worried as hell thought my gas gauge was broken.

Now that I crunched some numbers this almost seems impossible, theoretically I could have gotten 490 miles out of one tank.

I bet it's some ECU feature that improves fuel efficiency while cruising side by side with another 8!! :p

I agree. Polok, post the mileage from your very next tank. that should confirm the results.

PolaK,

I assume that when you left the gas station your gas gage red full. But what was the reading on your gas gage when you drove in before filling up?

That's really good Polak but I doubt I would get 31 if I ran at 70mph on cruise control and drove non-stop for 5 hours.... My best ever was 23.5mpg and that was like 90% highway driving.

My theory of your 31 mpg is that because of the rotary design, higher RPM = better gas milage. The rotary design has an inherant positive inertia component. So as you increase RPM you need less fuel burn to maintain engine momentum. Where as with the DOHC system increased RPM = worse gas milage because there is a negative inertia component. And more fuel must be expended to maintain the high RPM.

Conversely, because of the positive inertia component of rotary engines maintaining a lower RPM would cause you to expend more fuel. IE: lower RPM = bad fuel economy.

I'm curious to hear about your latest non-*****-foot results.

I think you are full of BS or you made a massive mistake in your calculations!!

235/31 = 7.5L/100KM.

The Toyota Echo 5-Speed is rated at 7.5L/100km

PoLaK,

Do you have any friends that may be fooling around and putting gas in your car just to drive you crazy?

1 I am not full of BS you can trust my word as MOD on this board.

2 no I don't think they would put gas in my car, but I have a funny story about turkey basters and that.

It was 2 am we were out of gas and did not have enough to make it to the nearest station assuming it was still open. So were like ok hummmmmm and we see a turkey baster placed conveniently on a trashcan at the friends house in which we were visiting. We look at each other were both thinking the same thing. So here we are 2 am running around the neighborhood with a turkey baster opening peoples gas tanks seeing if any where shallow enough to siphon some out. No luck, until we find a 69 vett modified (side exhaust etc..), and it finally worked, we made about 15 trips from the vett back to our car until we had enough gas.
