Help - stalls at idle

Got a 05 manual last week and the first night I drove it I noticed that it would stall when it was on iddle or when stopped. Took it to the dealer ship to have the ecu-reflashed to see if it would fix the proble but they told me i needed a new engine. I took it to an private owned shop who is an rx8 specialist and he told me that he ran a compression check and that its good, so he called the dealer and asked why they would condemn my engine. The dealer said they have a special machine that they put on rx8s and it basically said that the engine needed replacement. It has 45,000 miles on it and the warranty has been voided due to one of the owners lack of proof of maintenance.
The car runs good and strong and turns on easily, but it stalls when on iddle. The check engine light is on and the ran the scan and it came back with a p0172 code. The person I bought the car from said the dealer is full of crap and the car maybe needs an 02 sensor and that he was going to cover it. Has anyone ever had this problem, Im really desperate and dont know what to do since I traded my perfectly working mazda 3 for this rx8 and gave cash down as a difference.

P0172 = System too rich ON 2 Fuel system

Could be a bad front O2 sensor or a malfunction with the fuel pump.

Can you post up the numbers of your compression test? That code I believe is it running too rich so it might be an o2 sensor, you might try asking the previous owner if they had this cel too. You should also check spark plugs and ignition coils.

The compression test that they run said everything was between 110-115 which the mechanic said was perfect. The dude I bought the car swares to me and gives me his word that it needs an 02 sensor just like you guys said. But how can I tell this to the dealer when they already told me I need a new engine? The did a 2 mile run on it and concluded I needed a new engine. The compression test was done by another rotary engine specialist which he concluded that the compressions were fine, and wanted to have a talk with the dealer-ship and they said that their "special machine" said that the engine needed to be replaced so now this mechanic is telling me the same thing

He obviously sold you the car knowing that it had this problem, and didn't tell you about it. He could be right, but I wouldn't trust anything he says.

Is there another Mazda dealership that you can go to?

Thats why when you're buying an used rx8...you should test drive it for atleast 5 hours straight...non-stop...without turning off the engine..:P lol...j/k

Hope you didn't get a bad apple.....good luck!

help please

There is a dealership in orlando, but i really dont want to be spending all this extra money so I called the dude and told him that if he is so sure about it and that if he has so many good people down in west palm beach that could fix the problem, then i would take the car back and have him pay for parts and service done on it. My question is he had this car on ebay and represented it as " works perfectly, runs great, like new" the car fax was straight also. Is it agains the law to do this and what would be my chances of getting my money back? He is a liscenced whole saler.

Here in Arkansas you have recourse through the lemon law, but I think it only applies to new cars. The laws vary from state to state.

Call your local public library and ask a reference librarian. They will likely look it up for you, and it won't cost a dime.

Why not just ask the guy to buy the part and pay for the part to be swapped, or ask him to do it. If it works, then great, and if not, then ask him to help you fix it or take the car back and give you back the money?
