Grinding in 3rd gear

Yesterday when I was shifting into 3rd at redline , it made a grinding sound. I tired again today it did almost every time I tried, but only at redline It only does in 3rd gear. While back it was hard to get into 3rd at lower rpm it felt like gate was being blocked. What do you guys think is wrong with it?

It does if I slam it in or not;It happens soon as gear starts to engage . Its weird that it only does it near redline.

My 4th gear grinds at redline most of the time. It's slick as can be at lower rpms, though.

It sucks even more to have 3rd gear grinding though. Bent shift forks?

You have the short shifter though.

One of two things. Syncros are bad...rebuilt tranny, clutch isn't completely disengaging...needs adjusted.

pray for the latter.

I will going to dealer tomorrow, I just hope what it is its covered under warranty. I have act clutch, you think there will be a problem for the warranty from that? The dealer did install it about 6 months ago.

Sometimes when I'm redlining 1st and 2nd gear and go for a fast shift into 3rd I've ground it just because it wouldn't go into 3rd for a second. Its like I was shifting faster than it could handle. Only happens at redline, its nice and easy the rest of the time.

^ shouldn't happen, even if you are rushing a shift, as long as you're off throttle with full engagement - it shouldn't grind.

Mine was the redline 3rd to 4th shift at 90mph, got a new tranny and it's been perfect since.

I dropped it off at the dealer today, they called telling me I shouldn't be changing gears that high in the rpm. That I should change at 3k or 4k, I tried to explain all the power is on the top. I am just waiting for a call back now. 9291150 did you dealer fix it right away?

Well, if you don't change gears that high in the RPM band, how are you ever going to go faster?

It has nothing to do with engine speed, and everything to do with clutch disengagement and functioning syncros. Also, if you 'feel' the shift isn't going to 'go', then DON'T SHIFT. You probably don't want to continue a shift when the shift feels like it's starting to grind. Hurrying the shift doesn't do much except for grinding the syncros.

Hitman, your dealer is messing with you. Ask them to show you in the manual where it says you are not allowed to shift at redline.

My dealer didn't give me any problems, nor should they have 'cause I never missed a shift. Of course, I expected that they would have argued that I somehow abused the tranny, but they didn't. I guess it depends on your dealer.

Good luck.

overexerted stress on the shift fork then shifting into gear. Usually occurs when slamming into gear with too much force. There are other problematic causes, but is always has to do with excessive force on the shifter.

Guys guys, your over engineering everything again...starting to sound European....check your floor mat and make sure none of it in preventing the clutch from being depressed ALL THE WAY.

I had the same symptoms as you guys, now they're gone.

Unless of course you grinded it a little too hard too many times trying to figure it all out allready?

Peace from the East.

Nah the same thing happens with my 8 shifting into 3rd or higher at high rpms. Get this, i went to Mazda dealership and complained about it, the service guy said that he cant have his tech take it out and run it to redline to 3rd due to they mght get citation from the cops...you freakin kidding me!!! I told him he was full of it and he pretty much told me that even if they did take it out and find it DOES grind like crazy, they would prob blame it on abuse or some other crap and they would not be able to do anything about it. Im going to a different dealership.
