got pulled over in ny

i got pulled over in upstate ny, near kingston for a loud exhaust. i have the greddy catback, with the stock cat. i didnt get a ticket because i live in nj, but i was very surprised to get pulled over for it. she said it isnt legal in ny, and asked me if it was ok in nj. i told her it was supposed to be 50 state legal. she let me go without too much delay just thought it was weird. anyone else get pulled over for this garbage

NgoRX8 01-16-2006 06:42 PM

What'd she say after you told her it was supposed to be 50 state legal?

juikster 01-16-2006 06:50 PM

tell us the truth, she let you go because she owns an 8 too, eh...

saturn 01-16-2006 07:10 PM

My dad used to live in upstate New York and I know there's a law about motorcycles not being able to be too loud. I don't even think there's an actual limit -- just no excessively loud exhausts, whatever that means. Dunno about cars though.

There's all sorts of laws all over the place that allow cops to pull people over in case they suspect them of something. Ornamental lights used on ground effects, windsheild wipers, and wheels are all illegal in many places, but you generally don't get pulled over unless the cops suspect something else and need an excuse to pull you over. Also, they don't like it when you pull up beside them and say, "excuse me officer, do you by any chance smell bacon?"

allmotorRX8 01-16-2006 08:34 PM

maybe she pulled you over just so she can take a better look at the car, and couldnt think of any other excuse for pulling you over...

moRotorMotor 01-16-2006 08:39 PM

She got the hots for you, silly.

:) reminds me of the following blonde joke:

A blonde woman was speeding down the road in her little red sports
car and was pulled over by a woman police officer who was also a blonde.
The blonde cop asked to see the blonde driver's license. She dug
through her purse and was getting progressively more agitated.

"What does it look like?" she finally asked.

The policewoman replied, "It's square and it has your picture on
it."

The driver finally found a square mirror in her purse, looked at it
and handed it to the policewoman.

"Here it is," she said.

The blonde officer looked at the mirror, then handed it back
saying, "Okay, you can go. I didn't realize you were a cop."

she didnt seem to care since i lived in nj. she just asked how long i was staying, asked if i had any warrants or anything (she didnt even check). i was sitting at a light, the light turned green and i went. i didnt even know it was a cop behind me, i didnt hit the gas hard or anything so i was surprised i was pulled over. she also saw i didnt have a front plate, but she didnt seem to care, or she didnt have any rights to ticket me for this. i was glad nothing happened because i was just stuck in traffic for over an hour on the throughway and took that exit just to get off of that damn road. she said she could hear it with the windows up and the radio on, that is why she pulled me over. i wonder if she was by the toll booth because everything is more echo'd there. who knows?

Crazy Rx-8 Driver 01-16-2006 10:27 PM

I got pulled over after a week of owning my car, and the cop and i just stood around and BS'd for a bit about the Rx-8 because he always wanted one too! and he thought the yellow was hot. so we opened up the hood ( which is stock by the way) and showed him around lol. it was a good experience.

he let me go of course. just so you know, some cops out there are cool. some on the other hand... well i just wont comment lol

Razz1 01-16-2006 10:41 PM

All Cat Back exhaust are legal. For God's sake it's a muffler!

I doubt you will find one that's too loud.

Silver8x06 01-17-2006 01:57 AM

Must hit the G spot lolz

DOMINION 01-17-2006 02:11 AM

So was she hot?

youpey 01-17-2006 07:09 PM

no she wasnt hot, although while driving to my sisters house i saw a girl cop that was rediculously hot. i kind of wish it was her that pulled me over

knight7 01-18-2006 01:21 PM

NY cops are a$$holes, well not all just 99% of them. i gotten pulled over but just cause the cop wanted to see the car. i even let him sit on him.

I thought it was absolutely forbideen for a LEO to pull over a vehicle 'just to get a better look'. Isn't that harrassment? Isn't that why they need excuses like 'no front plate' and 'ornamental lights' to pull over cars that have some otherwise fuzzy probable-cause such as 'looks like a car full of gang members looking for trouble'?

I also have to ask, if you've only been pulled over because the LEO wanted to check out your car (implying they're a fan) why would you have such a low opinion of NY traffic enforcement? I'd expect you to back up the 'a$$holes' claim with some story of a $500 ticket you didn't deserve. ;)

Hey, youpey, glad you didn't have any trouble.

Joe_914 01-18-2006 04:02 PM

This is a no crap funniest thing.
Just got off the phone with the wife, She got pulled over speeding
I'm dying laughing because this is officially the second day of ownership.

She has also gotten a ticket in the Cooper in less than a week of driving it too.

I think I should ground her and make her drive the Explorer for a week. :ylsuper:

ucfracerx8 01-18-2006 04:52 PM

Maybe she had never seen an RX8 before and just wanted to find out what it is. I don't really agree with her definition of loud, an RX8 w/ Greddy and the cat is not that much louder than stock, certainly not louder than say a Harley or something. Maybe she was bored and wanted a quickie :bj: :69: . You missed your opportunity to :hitit:

Dislaimer: No smilies were injured preparing this message.

I would say "Probable-cause". Some peopl just dont like cops period :dunno:

Str8cold 01-18-2006 05:10 PM

The New York Legislature was in talks about passing a law making it illegal to put on an aftermarket exhaust, due to noise violations. They are trying to impose yet another NO TOLERANCE law into effect, and this law has such broad coverage that they would not have to worry about specifics such as decibal level.

Ouch! Glad it's funny to you guys. I hope its no real trouble.

I very seldom see another RX-8 in this valley and I've *never* seen another blue one. Mine is surely noticed and stands out to the patrols as much as a Ferrari (full price trouble for 1/10th the cost!) If the local traffic enforcement decides my car has a reputation as a speeder/idiot I'll be toast.

Buddy of mine a few years back had trouble in this valley. He had the only puke yellow Mitsubishi 3000GT in the area. On his way home one night he made a sudden change on the freeway off-ramp (two lane off-ramp, buddy didn't understand it at first) and cut off a car by mistake. The cut-off driver follows my buddy a couple of blocks to his apartment, then rolls down the window and shouts, "you should be more careful than to cut off an off duty cop dumb-ass". My buddy was surprised and outraged and he made some fairly abusive and vulgar comments to, uh, illustrate his point of view.

Now, after that my buddy is a magnet for speeding tickets. He wasn't exactly slow in that car, but he had no tickets in the year before the above incident, then got 3 or 4 in quick succession. Finally, he was charging home on the Interstate to pick up something he'd forgotten and saw a state trooper headed the other direction. He figured they'd try to come after him, but he was almost to his exit so he just proceeded on home. At the end of the off-ramp he notices a different state trooper getting on the freeway, but doesn't think anything of it. He gets home and two minutes later there is a knock at the door. It's trooper #1 who wants to ticket him for 85mph (possible, but not likely he could have actually clocked him given the lay of the road), plus he has a report from trooper #2 that my buddy ran the stop sign at the freeway exit (not true according to my buddy), so he's cited for that too.

This was simply too much. My buddy has already been to court once and already had a second court date booked where he expected his license to be suspended. This double-citation was in addition to all that. He changed jobs and moved back where he'd come from. Single, contractor, renting - he could do that.

Me, I own my house - I don't need that kind of trouble here. I don't expect trouble like that to drop out of the sky, but it sobering to see the worst case scenario happen to a guy you work with.

Joe_914 01-18-2006 07:20 PM

Well, a little history here. The nieghbor came over lst night and put a bet that the wife wouldn't go twenty days without a ticket. Shoot she didn't make 20 hours! :spank:

Yea all the cops know me and my 914. Bright yellow with 18" white dots on the doors and trunk lids. You know for racing numbers. I was pulled over one Sunday morning about 4 am on the way to an autocross event. 4 Hoosiers stacked in the rear trunk. Basically checking up on me and the car. "hey Joe Where ya going?" "By the way you were doing 70 in a 55 Slow it down till you get the the track ok?" "Good luck today" Gotta love small towns.

I think they know if I was really speeding they would play hell trying to catch me. :mdrmed:

Cool-Blue-Dad 01-19-2006 12:21 PM

That's funny about the bet. Hope your wife finds it funny too. No real harm done by one ticket. :)

Glad you don't have trouble with a car that recognizable. So far, I don't either. I actually think it's a good thing for them to have stopped you at 4am on a Sunday anyway. They might have mainly been checking to make sure it was really *you* instead of some punk trying to sneak away with your pride and joy. In that way, being known by the car you drive can be a really good thing.

ok i can think of so many stories in a sec. lets see, me and my brother in his legend, got pulled over, my bro accidently gave the cop his learners permit instead of his license, the cop gave him a ticket for that (even tho my brother told him im sorry here is my license). oh that same cop also gave him 5 tickets for each glass that was tinted in his car. one more for failing to ''produce'' which later we found out it was a no insurance ticket, weird the cop never asked for it. next story. drivin my previous car, Eagle talon TSi, i get pulled when i asked why, the cop says you cut off someone back there. i said no i didnt i just made a right turn on 163st. he goes to the car comes back gives me back my papers, turns arround and saids do you have tinted windows??? i say yes i do, he asked me to pull up my windows sees the tint it was good, im sorry for the inconvinience and leaves. now if thats not a asshole then what is? if you want i got many other on company vehicle and RX8 for havin my radio up too loud.... lol factory radio no mods, not even a bazzoka., muffler too loud, factory muffler.... and the best one of all.....

i just got the 8, i just finished parkin infront of my building when about 6 cops come out of a van and asked me for ID. ok why? which the cop said you were blockin the street back there, (iwasnt someone was backin up so i had to stop) i tell him this he looks at me and says whos car is this? i said mines, why? can i see your license and registration and insurance card? i said no my car is parked and locked. if you want i give you my id and if you want the car stuff i be comin out arround 7:00am to go to work if you want pull me over and i show you my car papers...

You would know if they do this anymore Knight7...

When I was a kid the NYPD had a thing about falsely accusing people of running lights and ticketing them. What happened at this time was my mother went to pick my father up from the train station. On the way home a couple of cops pull us over and come up to the car with pretty smug attitiudes. 1 on the drivers side and 1 on the passenger side. So they go through the whole you ran that light deal (just to be clear we were through the intersection before the light went red). So they come up and my mother let them know that the light had not turned red. My father also tried to interject that the light in fact was not red. At that time the cop starts yelling at my father as if he were a kid. My mother then cut the officers off, cursed them out and let them in on the little secret she also has a badge. Surprise, surprise my mother was a Correction Officer! :balls: She let them know she would be filing a report and they had nothing else to say as she drove off leaving them standing there. Yes there are some POS police officers out there!

Has anyone here heard about the pregnant girl being cited in NYC while entering the subway. They cited her because she stopped and sat on the subway steps for a second to rest. Yup, to serve and protect! While in a perfect world the police would be a great thing it more and more seems that their #1 function is a means of revenue for their state, city, or district!

RX-8 friend 01-21-2006 05:26 PM

Anywhere in Canada, it's illegal to install an exhaust with a tip larger than stock. My RX-7 has a 5" (I think-never actually measured it), and I've never been stopped (knocking on wood). A fellow who lives out of town was driving in with his Subaru STi and was stopped in a suburb for the "aftermarket exhaust". He had to get a letter from the dealer/Subaru to show the judge the Police were out to lunch! Usually the RCMP are better than that!

Ka Ka happens! ;)
