Thanks for the replys guys, im bringing it down to the mazda shop for a "check up" within the next few weeks as im about to take it on a 2000km road trip out to ontario. Regardless if i can improve my mpg or not the 8 is just too fantastic to care. I am in absolute love with it cant wait to tweak and play with it in the future.

 

I would say check the plugs, wires and even the coils.

People say that coils do not affect gas mileage but I've found that to be untrue.

When I first got my car I was averaging roughly 16-18mpg, 50/50 driving with 93 Premium Gas.

Out of no where my MPG drops to around 8-11mpg so I automatically assumed it was the CAT, had the cat checked out, it passed fine. I just had my plugs, etc changed less than 5,000 miles before this happened but not the coils, I replace the coils and I'm back to 18-19MPG.

 

Find another 1.3 liter that can produce 232hp, with a stratospheric redline of 9K+ RPM, all compacted into a tiny box under the hood we call rotary engine which makes the car very lightweight and a pleasure to drive.

Considering that, I feel the MPG on the RX-8 is actually very fair
