Old topic that's been discussed many times over!! Rotaries don't sip gas. Try driving and shifting in lower rpms. That might help. Gas mileage will improve, but not significantly. I'm pushing 250miles on a tank and I've got 35k.
If your not happy with the car because of this, you've should have done your homework.

look at the top bar... there's this thing that says "Search"
this might help you figure out what it does:

Maybe Honda can give us some Insight in this matter.
Prius-ly, I might have suggested Toyota.
But, there's just no fun factor there, now is there?
Now, as for the 225 miles thing, the tank is kinda small for a 20 +/- mpg car. It's no bigger than my other 2 cars that get around 25 and 30 mpg. The 25 mpg car (MX-6) needs gas at right around 300 miles and the 30 mpg car (G20-T) needs gas at about 400 miles. Now, I can get more miles on any of the three when I feel like playing chicken with myself, but I typically get gas when the light stays on. I guess Mazda thought the sacrifices of a larger tank doesn't justify the convenience. Mazda did make a compromise in performance here and there on the RX-8, but the size of the gas tank is not.
Why am I typing this stuff? Dunno. 225 is about right. You'll prob get 18 or so normal driving, 24 or so pure trip mpg. Now, go search and spend the next 20 hours reading all the mpg-related threads. If there could possibly be anything you would like to ask or discuss after that, I guess you really ought to do it in one of those. Bon apetite!
