Yes you will go through gas like crazy. its hard to keep your foot out of it and the revs down. The 8 is my seventh rotary and the most fun in curves! My first rotary had 100hp and got 12mpg in town and 18mpg on the hwy. This has twice the hp and better MPG! I get 16mpg city and regularly get 21mpg hwy. It just gets better as the miles pile on and the engine will rev freeer too. Enjoy it ...it's not your piston engine it's a ROTARY!

You will probably always think the mileage is bad and that you're draining gas more than regular cars. Just forget it and have fun.

I can pull off 200 miles per tank, and I don't drive it dry either. I guess that's one of those things that you know coming into it. You're getting a sports car, rotary or not, it'll get mediocre gas mileage.

NGORX8: Amen. :)

Other than driving slower or frequent trips to Taco Bell (makes more gas ... ) there's not much you can do.

It's a trade off. I got rid of my 30mpg, regular gas car for the 8. I knew up front that my gas mileage would be cut in half, and that I would be paying 20 cents more per gallon for premium. It is a small price to pay for owning the car of my dreams.

I've heard that mileage improves as you put on more miles. I get about 260 miles to the tank with pretty much all highway driving. My car is 3 weeks old with 1,500 miles on it. I expect that number to go up a little, but it doesn't really matter to me if it doesn't.

Just give it time, you will notice when the car is new the milage wil suck really bad. As you put some miles on the car the milage will increase. As for mods that increase milage I put on the racing beat revi and got a slight gain in milage. I currently have 20,000 miles and I am getting about 300 + miles per tank.

Seriously though, you guys should be able to get 300 + miles on a full tank on the highway.

All city is the worse.

Wha?

"Dont floor your accelerator at every light."

..... I think the rotory gods will take your 8 away if you don't floor it at every light.

Your choice though. Do you want better gas mileage or would you rather the rotory gods take away your 8.....?

Thought so.

my k+n filter got me a little better mileage - like 2mpg better over the last 2 tanks. maybe that's not enough to prove anything but i believe in those filters.

If it is any consolation, I've been lurking on the G35 board and they complain quite a bit about gas mileage and how bad the G is in the snow. Dedicated snow tires are a must for the 8 and the G35. Oh by the way, I'm thinking of getting a G for my wife.

I'm almost ready to call this a fact, but I wont...lol, BUT enough members here (like myself) have seen that as the 8 breaks in it get's better fuel economy.

I drive like I want to and I've never hit under 18.7 nor ever been higher than 20.49mpg in all city, so that's my history to calm you down a bit. Like they are telling you, if you hit 9K at every other light then don't complain about fuel economy...it's your fault.

If you drive pretty normal and you are hitting 15's then maybe something is wrong...MAYBE...

Since I hit 5K and now at 6K the 8 seems to be drinking significantly less fuel. I'm almost positive that I'll hit over 20 for the forth time in 5 tanks in ALL CITY driving. During this tank there have been at least 2 9K, 1 8K, and 3 7K hit's so I'm not driving like a grandama.

Relax and enjoy your 8, fuel economy will get better in time.

I have been a consistent 15mpg with all city, make that "urban sprawl" but like was said in the last post, depends on how you drive it, when I can break free, it will see at least 6k, probably more like 7k, so I am doing it to myself . Heck the other night I was in a hurry to get home and hit the BEEP in 2nd and 3rd, that probably isn't going to help this tank, maybe I should just stop and fill it up and pretend like nothing happened???

Screw it, I think I'll enjoy the car more if the mileage gets worse.

well I have 450 miles on it so I'm not beating it up yet lol I'm taking it easy and breaking it in and I got 14 MPG to this tank which is only my 2nd and 225 to the tank so I was told the gas milage sucked but with a 16 gal tank I expected to get around 300

I agree that 225 miles on a 16 gallon tank adds up to 14 miles per gallon. But the RX-8 tank only holds 15.9 gallons - and I know you can't be running it dry. Otherwise you'd be pushing it into the gas station. Maybe you need to check your math. The fuel light comes on at about 13.5 gallons which works out to be 16.7 miles per gallon.

Find a gas station that has a hottie chick working at the register. Then you won't mind visiting her so often. Stop setting your trip indicator everytime you fill up. You will enjoy the car more if you don't worry about it. It just is.

If you are lighting up your tires at every light, you might be concerned with the police taking your 8 away.
