gas guage needle accuracy

Anyone know if gas gauge needle goes from full to empty in an evenly manner ,or for example does last quarter go down faster?

Mine seems pretty linear. I get around 200 miles per tank, and I hit the 1/4-tank marks at about 50-mile increments.

200 miles per tank? that hurts

i've been running consistenly 23-24 mpg
just filled up 12 gallons for 268 miles, which comes out to about 22mpg i think.
I drive 60/40 (hwy/city)

Pretty linear, I think. That last 1/4 might be a bit faster. Could be my imagination though...

my fuel gauge shows 50% right at aroung 95-105 miles, when i hit 1/8th tank i'm normally 225miles give or take a couple when the light turns on. i guess that means the first half goes a lil quicker for me.

First half is faster on mine too...I have also noticed that the light is VERY conservative. Mine comes on at nearly a quarter tank. I guess Mazda knows this thing sucks gas, so they warn you early and often. I reach about 90 miles at the half and about 225 when I fill up with 14 gallons at empty.

The first half goes faster on mine. I usually hit the 1/2 at about 120 - 130 miles and the quarter at 200 to 210. I never go below the 1/4 mark so I'm not sure how fast it goes to empty.

First half is definitely faster on mine, with about 100-110 miles or so, depending on my driving. I'm hoping for some economy improvement, but am not going to sweat it too much.

After all, we need to support the Iraqi people and buy their gas, right?? (sarcasm)

the first half will defintely go faster. when the tank is full, it is much heavier then when it is half, lighter car = needs less energy = needs less gas. infact u can even feel the a dramtic power difference when the tank is full and when the tank is near empty.

I noticed that today, I had about a 1/4 tank and it seemed like it had more power. I've let mine run sort of low and it looked like it was almost empty, according to how much I was able to put in, I still had about 3.5 gallons in it. I too average over 20-24 mpg most of the time.

In my experience, it seems the gas need has a tendency to just sit there or move really slowly one moment, like it doesn't or BARELY moves for like 30 or 40 miles, then in the next 10-20 miles it moves like a whole notch and a half.

with my poor mileage (see my log), each quarter of a tank for me yields roughly 50-55 miles on the average, so when I reach the 3/4 mark with ~175-180 I get a smile on my face, but then it vanishes as the needle moves through the last quarter of the tank in the next 30 miles. likewise it also happens sometimes halfway or even the first quarter thank. I think, "wow, I've already at 70 miles, and I've just reached the first quarter notch".. then a moment later the fuel gage seems to "catch up" to where it should be... Giving me a very consistent average of about 210-220 miles to the tank (or should I say ~15-16 MPG, to be more accurate.

Well, after 6 tanks, mine seems to be very non-linear. The first 30 or so miles on a full tank *appears* to consume 1/4 tank. I usuallly fill up at the 1/4 Full mark and that usually only adds 8 or 9 gallons.

I'm watching to see what happens as I put more miles on...

The first half of mine is noticeably faster. YOu can actually see the needle move from the F position to the 3/4 position. very weird. The last half is alot slower yet i seem to ge tthe same mileage from both halves of the tank.

I find that I get more miles on the first half than the second half of the gauge. It is probably because when I fill up the needle is about 1.5 notches above the F mark. By the time it hits F, I have 30 miles on the counter already. After that it will be about 55 miles per quarter mark.

I am up to 500km per tank. It is just because I am going 90% freeway.

16L per 100km is the average I get... is that about 20 mpg?

Nope 16l/100km = 14.7 mpg(US) = 17.66 mpg(UK)
If you're really getting 500 km then it would be much better than the 16l/100km you quoted.
More like 12l/100 km, which is about 19.6 mpg(US) or 23.5 mpg(UK), which is very good indeed.

Fairly linear compared to other cars I've owned. The first half seems to go somewhat faster than the second, but it's not a huge discrepency. On some cars I've had, the gauge would take 200 miles to reach halfway then 80 miles to reach almost empy.

I'm getting 13 MPG with just under 1k miles on the car. A lamborghini diablo supposedly gets 14 MPG. Ouch.
