Future collectible classic...
I think they should stuff more Mazda in there!
I'm already seeing good specimen low mileage under 100k km RX-8s heading back up in price. Leading the charge is of course the R3 which are averaging 5 figures where I am.

Like with any collectible, closer to all original, the better. And like with classic Porsches, Corvettes, Mustangs, XKEs and Beetles, S1s will be more valuable than later versions, I bet. But this is all 10-20 years in the future.

As much as I want to stick with the original stuff, the ignition and cat are not staying. I wouldn't do too many other mods, though, and it shouldn't be hard to go back to stock if necessary.
Not necessarily. There are about 150+k S1 RX-8s ever produced, while there are only, at most, 17k S2s ever made. That's roughly about 10 S1s out there for every S2, and in my area, there are tons of S1s for sale, but only 1 S2, and it's a crappy automatic GS.

Only available in '04, so they might be more collectible than the other S-1s.
I'm hoping anyway.
Also the BB along with the LY were the only Mica free colors, iIrc.
i thought ng was an 04 only color.

Metropolitan grey mica? It's the 40th anniversary exclusive grey. Mazda and their greys...
I would think the limited editions like the 40th anny and R3 and those weird Pro-drive versions in Europe would be the most valuable. Just like the 25th anny and R2 are the more valuable RX-7s. If you have one, keep it happy

I think the S2 R3 will be the "one to go to" in those upcoming RX-8 Buyer's Guide. I cannot see S1 having strong values although S1 numbers will go down by sheer attrition.
Good question about original engines being the coveted specimens. Don't know. What do people recommend over at the Newbie forum? Compression test bla bla...
Victoria BC eh? I found 3 S2 in Craigslist in BC. 2 are R3 (black and blue).... plus that crappy red automatic. Automatic RX8s should be stripped down for parts.

I know there is this blue R3 in Victoria with tinted taillights. I saw it quite a few times. One time I even gave the driver a thumb up as I was waiting at a stoplight with him. Last time I saw it was a week ago when I was getting gas. The dude probably saw me and floored it. Had some flames coming out of the tailpipes as well.
R3 is good if you are looking for best possible performance. I am a sucker for interior comfort features, hence why I got a GT.
About that automatic GS S2... I am legitimately curious to see how long it takes the dealer to sell it. The listing still says "just in time for summer", LOL.
The biggest problem for a lot of AT RX-8s(including the early "base autos" and that AT GS S2) is that they fail both as a performance-oriented sports car and a comfort-oriented Grand Tourer. If it at least is a GT with HID lights, Bose audio, heated leather seats, etc., it would be excusable as a Grand Tourer, but it's a base trim without those features...
Collectible yes, worth more than they ever were when new, no way.
What about Velocity Red being around since the beginning or about RX-8's never being worth ****?
And the only color I would want that is rare, is Statos Blue, not to be confused with Stormey Blue. We never got Stratos Blue in the states.
