Fuel economy on '05 RX-8

Hey all,
I have a new '05 RX-8 Shinka Ed. sitting in my garage. I am looking at my odometer and my gas gauge, and I'm not seeing the 18-26 mpg I should be getting... if I keep going at this rate, I MAY hit 200mi on this gas tank... is that weird? So that leads me to this question - What's the most fuel-efficient way to drive an RX-8 (Manual)?? More importantly, what RPMs should I be shifting at between gears to get the best gas mileage? Just curious... I know I'm not driving an economy car - but with gas prices being what they are... when I am not racing someone, I want to at least get decent gas mileage. Thoughts??

I've hit 173 miles (280 km) with a tank before...so don't feel too bad.

Do a couple of searches, this topic has been beaten to death. Basically you need to short shift to get even close to those milage estimates.

In my "average" driving, I generally shift somewhere around 4, 4.5K. A few squirts here and there above. If I do all city driving that way, I usually get somewhere in the order of 17-18. With a good mix of highway driving, and much the same style, I've broken 20mpg about 5 times in the past 2 years of ownership.

The gas mileage has gotten better as time has gone on, but I'm not sure if that's due to the misc "flashes" received at the dealership when it was in for service.

1. Break it in.
2. Keep the oil level up.
3. Short shift, or ride Hwys.
4. Keep the A/C off.
5. Don't race it; particularly on the street. You'll get really lousy mileage with it on its roof.

im sorry but im going to close this thread. please search and read the other gas mileage threads. there are many that speak about the best shift points and rpms etc. also there is a section in your Manual if you read it that tells you best shift points.
