Smile Florida Drivers & Anyone in Extreme HOT Weather climate PLEASE HELP.!!!

Hello everyone, i am a new member to the Forum and a new Rx8 Owner.

I know there are plenty of threads about this out here but none of them seem to really get a specific conclusion.

I will like to know what type of Oil do you guys use in Florida's hot weather conditions?? Like i said before i know that there are tons of threads here about the type of oil to use on the 8's but none of them specify the weather condition's of where you drive your 8's. I put 30 miles to and from work a day on my RX8.

Just so you guys know my situation. I just bought an 04 Rx8 with 34k miles on it about a month ago and the car keeps on shutting down on me after driving long periods of time on the highway. SAME AS A COUPLE OF PEOPLE HERE. " Ive red those threads already" I replaced the coils, plugs and wires on it and i had the engine checked for pressure and it was fine. Whenever this happens its always Really hot outside and the car its usually Super hot.

So please those of you that live in FL or in any other state where is Always really Hot, help me with some advice in regards to your oil selection.

By the way i was thinking about
Royal Purple XPR 20W50 Racing 51

but like i said Im new to the Rotary experience so i don't know much only what you guys have discussed here.

Thank you all in advance.

Hmm

Save yourself a few bux and use Regular Royal Purple 20w50. and you're set.

or any REAL Full Synthetic 20w50 (when I say REAL, it has to be either PAO or even better, Ester based)

^I agree but I'll leave my 2 cents...

When I lived in FL I was using 10w30 in the summer and 5w30 in the "winter" but I recommend 10w30 AT LEAST all year....

Mazda did a compression test and said it was good?

The engine turning off while driving is serious and dangerous. Get a refund. Throw some different oil in there and hope for the best? I think not.

Well I'm not sure if this will help you much or not... but seeing as I'm in Florida I figure I could give you my experience (South Florida actually, Miami/Broward area..so we have probably the hottest weather year round)

First.. my 8 is an '05... I'm the first owner, it's typically garage kept when home, and 'usually' was in a parking covered garage while at work. (Sometimes I got stuck on the roof so it wasn't always covered).

I drove 22miles each way to/from work, every day. I've also taken the car from Miami to Jupiter a few times, and often to West Palm. NEVER has my car shut down or given me any sort of problems. I have about 46k on the car right now. It's a stock Manual, with the only possible 'engine' mod being that I installed a pair of mesh/grills in front of each of the oil coolers (just behind the foglights) to protect them from rocks and such... my coolers look just like they did when I bought the car.. no dents, rocks, bugs, etc..

Heat MIGHT be an issue in an '04 as I do recall some sort of issue with cars out in Arizona overheating constantly, due to some faulty gaskets/seals or something but I thought those engines were recalled (Might want to check with dealer to be sure all recalls were performed and your VIN # didn't fall into that engine recall)

Now as to the oil, when I first got the car, I looked into Synthetics and others.. but the general consensus at the time was that full Synthetics were really bad for the 8. Now it seems that many people 'in the know' are saying it's fine and might be better.. I personally have no clue either way.. but something the dealer mentioned when I asked them struck home.... The RX8 engine is warrantied now for something like 8 or 10 years.. so long as you follow the guidelines regarding maintenance... those guidelines say 5w20 oil.. putting anything else in your engine could void the warranty should a problem arise.

I've used 5w20 since I bought the car.. changed the oil regularly (though I usually only have to add about a quart between changes.. not much at all compared to some users). It never overheats, never gives me a problem of any sort.

My thought is simply that should an engine problem arise, I don't want Mazda claiming "Ohhh you put synthetic in the engine? No wonder! Not covered!" or something similar.

My advice is before you put anything other than 5w20, check with whatever dealer you use, and have them agree it's OK.. and get it in writing.. otherwise you probably can kiss any warranties goodbye.

One final note..I personally believe that oil choice will not cause issues if you follow what the knowledgeable people on these boards say regarding weight/brand.. after all they tend to run some very nice machines and seem to have no problems... sadly I cannot afford to replace an engine should something go wrong.. so I'm taking the chicken approach and allowing Mazda to dictate what's best... One day, when the warranty isn't an issue for me.. I'll come back and listen to the gurus..

Good luck, and definitely take your 8 to the dealer or repair shop if it's cutting out on you at all.

Flush & fill the cooling system with Prestone - my car runs way cooler now and Iswear my AC is colder, too.

It's bizarre.

Do the "throttle body bypass mod" in the DIY section also. It's hot as 300 hells here and this mod helps IMO.

I don't consider FL to be "real hot"

The folk in AZ get to see real heat.

Actually Miami is one of the hottest cities in the US.. it was over 90 today.. add to that the lousy humidity and it's probably the worst you can get outside of Texas for a Human. Arizona might be hotter temperature-wise.. but it sure doesn't feel like it.

I don't know what effect Humidity has on engines.. but I've been out in Arizona when it was closer to 100, and it FELT like it was only mid 80's since there was no humidity.. I burned like crazy in about 20 minutes, but damn.. did it feel better than at home.

Anyway.. any other Oil stories? I would love to know what people are using in this state.

wow,

lots of info but not what is needed.

how long or how many miles do you have to drive it to happen?

sounds very much like a fuel pump issue..

Yep, I agree with Swoope on this one. Your RX8 shutting down on you have nothing to do with your oil choice and I wouldn't be basing the oil choice on the kind of heat you are experiencing. Do you know what your oil temperatures are during the hot parts of the year? If so, what kind of oil heating problems are you experiencing?

It was 103 degrees this evening at 6pm when I was driving into work and my oil temperatures were right in line with my coolant @ 180 degrees. The only time I have experienced excessive oil temperatures has been when I tracked my car and the track temperatures were north of 130 degrees with ambient being 105 to 110.

Otherwise I see high temperatures in traffic but that is due to the coolers not functioning at idle or low speeds and heat from the road surface cooking the oil pan. It's got to be 105 at least but probabaly above 110 before that happens.

I digress.

The most common fuel pump failure occurs on long trips and or in hot conditions where the pump cannot cool itself for whatever reason. The result could be anything fron the pump stumbling and not providing fuel to your case where it complety cuts out.

If you let the car sit for 15 to 30 minutes can you start it back up with no problem? If so, I'd look to have your pump replaced.

It would take quite a lot of heat to cause your motor to fail because the oil temperature was excessive and if it did you would know it.

Ok here is the deal
The car is an 04 Automatic with 35,000 miles. NO MODS, everything is original on the car.
The car usually starts to shut off after like 25 miles (give or take) of driving.
and i am in Fort Lauderdale FL, Pembroke Pines to be exact.

By the way every time the car its going to shut off the Air Coolant sign comes up and that's when i know to switch to a safer lane because the car is going to shut off on me for a good 5-10 min.

Whoa, i would of never thought that ALL of you guys will be so helpful. I seriously can't thank you guys enough. Thank you all again.

Whoa that sounds like the exact same thing that is happening to me since the coolant sign comes up. What is a good pump to use for the 8's?

Thanks Flash. Thank you all.

Thank you all for your support. I am still amazed at how nice all of you guys are ( even though i have an AUTO, lol ). Thank you "Flashwing", I changed the fuel pump and the car is running like new. I thought i was never going to be able to drive this car again. Jesus i love driving my 8.
I don't know how the people down at Mazda service department didn't thought of that. It was funny when i told the dude that the problem is the fuel pump cux he thought he knew it all and when i told him he was like whatever and he then checked and came back to me and told me that i was right that the fuel pump was failing at something there. I made him look like an idiot thanks to you Flash and Swoope. lol Thank you all. Now let me go get started on my mods!!! What should i do first?? lol let me see............

Thank you all again.

Stock fuel pump fails easily, it fails faster if you fill your 8 up only when its almost empty.

glad it work out for you

You got an 4 Port AT I suggest you to save your money for something else. if you really just wanna do "soemthing" to your car, first thing you should do is add another oil cooler.
