Flooding = Dealbreaker?
After reading many posts on the flooding issue, it is starting to concern me to the point of maybe not getting my beauty -- maybe someone can clear up the issue.
From what I understand, if you turn the car on and do not wait to let it warm up (at least halfway on the meter), then shut it off -- it will flood. What I want to know is, once you flood it, how long do you have to wait to be able to start it up again. I have heard anything from 10 minutes to 2 days! One guy even said he had to have it towed. I don't want to pay 20-30K for a car to have to tow it if it floods! Maybe I am overreacting...is the flooding that big of a deal and does anyone know if its been addressed on the 06's?
I want my RX8 and I hope I can work through this to get it!!

Rotarys do not unflood themselves. No amount of waiting will unflood it. You can unflood it by depressing the gas pedal to the floor and cranking it for about 5 seconds. This will shut off the fuel and should unflood it. If that doesnt work you can always pull the EFI fuze and crank it for 5 seconds or so. The problem has been mostly cleared up though. This isnt as big of an issue as it was when the Rx8 was first released.

It's not that it WILL flood, it's that it CAN flood. For me, with all the short trips I make, and how much I rely on my car to do my business it's a risk I wouldn't be able to take. So it's up to you to decide if you can put up with it flooding every once in a great while if you don't warm it up properly. If the answer is no then you may want to look for an alternative.

Screw gas mileage
First of all....if you turn it off cold it MAY flood, not WILL flood. I've had mine for a year and a half with no flooding at all. Second, it takes about 5 minutes to warm up the car enough, and i've seen more people say that they turn it off cold all the time than people who did it once and flooded it. There's a de-flood procedure in the manual (i haven't had the occasion to try that yet) that seems to be mostly successful, but aside from that, if you manage to flood it, you'll have to get it towed to the dealer so they can replace your spark plugs (and i think they may give you a new battery and starter too, to prevent future floods).
In short, flooding is such a rare occurance it's no reason not to get the car. It's on the same level as "i don't want to add oil every 1500 miles so i'm getting a different car" If you take care of the car properly, you won't have a problem.

Mine did not flood for 9 months, with many cold stops and restarts. Then out of nowhere (under conditions that were no different from all those before), my car flooded and had to be towed. Now, I make sure I let it warm up before I turn it off. Not a big deal unless you have a lot of short (less than a mile or so) trips in cold weather.
Only you can decide if this is a big enough issue to keep you from buying the 8. It just requires a new way of thinking when you shut down your engine.

i was worried before i bought mine in october of 05... I havent had a single problem with flooding. The car does warm up very quick (5 min if you are actually driving it) and if you get used to the habit of giving the throttle a little jab and then turn the ignition off while the engine is doing 3-4K RPM you should be fine. Ive never had to use the de-flood procedure, and i have been guilty of "moving it out of the garage 20 feet and turning it off" just to wash it.... and didnt have any flooding
I say its not a big deal anymore and go buy the car!

Had mine for 18 months and NEVER flooded it, even with short trips and incomplete warm-up's (Just Lucky!).
If you get an 05 or 06, you'll probably be fairly safe even-though every car has it's own personality.
I've had the spark plugs replaced and have the latest Flash.

All these threads turn out the same... Someone posts concerns about the flooding, and then a bunch of RX-8 owners chime in that they have had their car for X long and have not flooded. Bottom line, assume that your RX-8 will flood once or twice, if you can live with that and still be happy with your purchase then go buy the car.

^^ Do NOT assume that your car is going to flood "once or twice"
Here's the bottom line: Your RX-8 CAN flood if you don't follow the directions BUT flooding seems to be on the decline with some of the later 05 builds, new starters, batteries, etc.
If you really want the car, buy it.
