Unhappy First Wreck on the Forum??

I think I am the first lucky guy here to have his beautiful baby completely destroyed. It happened on a nice night in late December. I was cruising along happily , I applied my brakes and out of nowhere some stupid B***H!!! hit me from behind!! Of course she decided to drive off for a hour or so to collect her thoughts leaving me and my demolished 8 on the side of the road. Luckily one of my friends happened to know who she was and called her up. Anwayz I just got it back from the body shop today... three months later!! They had to wait on parts forever.... it looks ok but I dont think she'll ever be the same.
Just thought I'd share my misfortune with you all...
here are some pics of the damage
and o yea to all you other 8 owners ...............
watch out for women drivers( no offense to any ladies):D

I'd have had her arrested for leaving scene of accident, and/or I'd have chased her in the car if it was still drivable after hit. That's inexcusable in my book, and I'd have made sure she had gotten in trouble for doing so.

First, sorry about your RX. What a stupid thing.

I'd have had her arrested for leaving scene of accident
I agree. That can't be tolerated.

Did it bend your frame at all? Don't let the insurance company off the hook if you have any issues with the frame.

So which car was completely destroyed? It sure isn't the one in the pictures. That's just an accident - not wrecked, certainly not destroyed...

Angry wreck

well I really hate to stand up and say so but on jan 2 2004 my RX 8 with 233 miles was in a wreck.
my son took the car to the store 2 miles down my road and a man who owns a welding/machine shop on both sides of the road decided to pull across both lanes and panic and just stop.
my Son not wanting to t bone him took the ditch.............ok it's still hard to even think about.
result pass side door ,rear door and rear quarter are all brand new. the parts took for ever.and I got it back on 2/16/04
I had to use my insurance as he would not cooperate.
the police report totally said he was wrong and was issued a ticket.but I had to pay my 1000. deduc. and now we are in court trying to force them to pay.he lost all rights to fight as he did not reply to certified registered mail from his company and mine but her I sit less the 1000 and my 20 year marrige present raped. I am really happy they replaced every damaged part but with 233 miles they didn't fight to remove dents add bondo etc.
besides some over spray and collision shop dust in every cranny,a ruined tire that we had to fight a little about.and the fact they ran the buffer across the plastic on the mirrors its all better now.
looks like my best option is to trade it in for a new one in two years maybe they will have the turbo by then

Yes...there is significant damage to that car. A Unit-Body construction like our cars don't have a specific frame. Think of it like boxes behind the fenders and quarter panels. The rear took a hit from an angle, which went right into the corner of the rear. This damaged the "corner" of the rear unit-body box. This will have to be puller out and sraightened before new panels are fitted on top.

Supension components bent on right rear also.

Rear quarter skin is not a removable panel (unless they cut and weld)...so some filler will be happening there unfortunatly.

They replaced my quarter yes duplicating they factory spot welds and yes they do at the factory blend the roof to it also they use some sort of sealant adhesive in areas but mine is new and with a plastic coated magnet you can find the blend in the same spots as the factory
I sat mine right next to a duplicate car and went over mine after the repair like a hawk before I signed off on it. they had oh maybe 10 things to redo mostly paint and small detail items.they would not replace the mirrors they ran the buffer over, the put on some armoral on them I said what are u goona do this everyday for the rest of your life to keep hideing the shine you buffed off???
I also argued to the insurance that the cars value was lowered by the wreck & repair. provided dealer quotes to exchange for a new one minus the 233 miles and the drive off the lot cost.
It worked out to about 3800 plus 8.5% NYS taxes
they laughed at me ........
I wanted to just get a new one and pay my losses but figured the insurance co. knew down the road sombody does a car report on it and now it will show up wrecked and I will have to settle for a lower sale price .........the car is repaired 100% correct
but still
sucks to be me ....I personally have never wrecked one of my toy cars..broke alot of hi-po parts but never any body work except when I forgot to empty my gas tank and the nitro gas mix melted all the rubber gaskets and when I started it the next day my carb and hood burned till the fire was put out quicky. 69 z-28 with 454
did 10.5,s in streetclothes

I feel your pain. I was the unfortunate victim of a hit and run with similar damages to yours. Cost was about 3800 as well. I had about 4000 miles on my car at the time. But surely you realized the insurance company was not going to buy you a new 8.... Even when they pay for a total loss, they don't replace the vehicle, they pay the market value of the car, not how much you owe on it. I'm sure you knew this, but thought "It can't hurt to try." Anyways, sorry to hear about your plight. The body shop that repaired my car guaranteed 100% of their work over the lifetime of the car, so this sort of helps with the resale value. Did your body shop provide the same kind of warranty?

Had the rear end of my 8 staved in by a drunk frat boy on October 31, and I wasn't the first either. Glad that it's fixed and best of luck.

yes I knew it was a stretch but reading my ins. contract it did say market value.but what is the market value of a non crashed rx/8 vs. crashed?????
the cost of repair was$4574 the 3800 was the lost market value. as I was going to just sell it and buy a new one. but I was trying to lessen the bump by my wrecked vs unwrecked value numbers there by upping my true loss on the accident
it did not fly but hey gotta try...
any way I'm very happy with the car my first rotary. really pulls nicely in third @ 65 70 in the curves.all most like a two cycle engine would react in the rpm's
only complaint is the head room with the sunroof I'm only 5,11 and my head hits
I'm gonna pull the seat and devise a way to lower the seat an inch.
this will involve cutting and welding the floor pan problely we will see this summer. and it must look invisible altered a little grinding and some flat black paint

Hello

Saw your post and sorry to hear your news.

This past Sunday I was parked in a lot. When I returned to my car it was hit in the driver's side lower quarter panel by SOMEONE. What was amazing was that nothing else was hurt. Apparently it popped 2of the plastic wheel well screws (found them)and bounced back into place - just 3 - 4 inch scratches. I am not the first but any of us hate to have accidents happen. THe first one I remember seeing on here was back in the summer - one from Japan smashed to pieces. They seem pretty sturdy.

One of the intangible aspects (now) of this is when you go to try and sell this car in a couple/few years. You can't say: "Never been in an accident."

Sometimes that will take $$$ of the bottom line. I know it does for Corvettes.

But try an get an insurance company to acknowledge that...not gonna happen.

As far a s my car goes, I will not "say" it has been in an accident. One point on this though. I spoke with a gentleman once about value on a previously wrecked car that was restored to nearly new condition and the effect on value (he bought and sold more expensive primarily European cars for a living) and his reply was interesting. Visible signs of certain damage will certainly hurt the car - dented panels in the engine well, doors/hoods/trunks pushed in, bondo showing, etc. A professional repair though, to a discerning car dealer will not create concern if the observation is such that does not lead beyond moderate cosmetic work.

I took this to mean that cleanly repaired cosmetic damage is of minor concern but that damage that caused greater problems (frame damage, etc) would be a value killer.

Understand too that I was there with my previously wrecked but repaired BMW. They replaced the front fender, bumper, hood and left fender and headlight assembly but miraculously all else was untouched. BTW I got full trade-in (by the book anyway)

All is not lost.
