First Three Tanks: Average 21.71 mpg in mixed driving 50/50

I don't know how or why, but I am pleasantly surprised.

I was dreading the 12-18 mpg range I've been reading about.

I haven't been driving it hard, since it's new, but I haven't exactly let traffic blow by me, either.

That's very good. It should improve over time, if you don't get addicted to the beep!

On the other hand, if like me you drove it very carefully when you first got the car and open it up later, it may not be so good going forward. I hope your mileage stays high though.

You gotta be an engineer to be plotting your mpg like that...

You got me there!

I have a spreadsheet on my PDA in which I make notes when I fill up. The columns are: Date, Miles, Gal, $, Octane, Oil Level, Oil Added. As soon as I punch in the information it tells me my mileage. I also know by looking at it what level the oil was and when, so I know if I should check the oil level.

When I sync my PDA with my laptop I have a nice pretty chart that gets updated as I go along! You can see that the trend has in general been up from 15/15.5 to 16/16.5 mpg. I switched to 87 octane around March, which is when it started to trend up. I don't know if a 1mpg difference is significant. If I switch back to 91 and see it go down, that would be significant.

i took a day trip to vegas and i left for the trip with 27 miles on my tank .. i arrived with 305 miles, problem was i filled up at a prepay shop so I could not simply just let my tank fill... so i am not quite sure how much gas I used... I am guess I was getting around 21 miles .. and i was going rather fast.. i probably averaged ... 75-80 most of the way
