first road trip

Been away from home for 7 months now and I cant wait to get back next week. I miss driving my car, I'm afraid I forgot how to drive a manual, it's been 7 months since i've even driven. My dad has been taking it out every week since i've left and he said it's been running great. I'm actually excited to drive 1,700 miles to my next base. I'm just alittle concerned about how well it will do, i dont really plan to sleep until i finish.
I'm also worried about the huge climate condition change. From sunny and warm, to wet and freezing. I know for sure my tires need to be switched not sure about the oil, I have 5w-20. I'm not really looking for advise, i just needed to put my thoughts down, and i figured since it's been 7 months since i've posted i thought i would put myself out there again.
However, if you took your rx8 on a road trip before it would be nice to know how yours did.

The only thing I'd do is change the oil (if it hasn't been done in 7months), check all fluids are good and topped up and make sure you have air in the tires.

People drive many miles in one trip and have no issues. Some even say it's a very comfortable drive

Tires yes, don't worry about changing to another weight of oil if you have always used 5w20. Your current weight will be better for winter temps anyway. From what you said someone has been driving it while you were away, so everything will hopefully be good on it. They were doing all the maintenance while you were gone and not just driving it?

I have never drove that many miles in my car before, most I have done is around 800 miles somewhere and then few days later 800 back. Going for 1700 miles without sleeping is possible but probably a bad idea, personally I get tired towards the end of those 800 mile trips.

The real question is where are you driving from, and going to?

As for oil change, when was the last time it had an oil change?
How many miles/months ago?

1700 miles isn't bad. That's a bit less than when I drive from Denver to NYC, which is right around 1800 miles. Usually takes me around 30 hours or so, depending on how many naps I take.

And yes, get rest.
I would recommend that you take a nap every other gas fill up, or at least break for 20 minutes, and have a bite to eat. Get your head cleared of any cobwebs.

I changed the oil right before i left. so it's been 7 months but it's only gone about 80 miles. and i guess it would be a good idea to sleep during the night. i'm trying to finish the drive in about 20 hrs. though

You realize that gives you an average speed of 85 mph, right?
You should rethink how long its going to take you to get from point a to point b.

7 months is not long enough to forget to drive a manual. When i went in the Army for 3 years, i sold my Mitsubishi Mighty Max mini truck (manual transmission), and never owned a car when i was in the Army. Anyway, after i got out of the service, i bought a Nissan 200SX (manual transmission), and i did not forget to drive a manual. It's like riding a bicycle, or swimming...never rode and swam for a long time, but i know that i still know how to ride a bike and swim...lol
