first oil change?

i got a new 2011 rx-8 and got 920 miles on it. I went to juffylube to check my oil and they told me that my car was burning up to much oil since 1 quarts of it was gone already... and they said take it back to the dealership cause there might be some problems with it...any suggests if my car has some problems or not?

Did you research the peculiarities of the rotary before you bought this car? It's supposed to use oil to lubricate the apex seals.

And don't use jiffylube for your first oil change. Or any really.

Search around a bit. There's a lot of good info on here about the rotary and care and maintenance for it on this site. And countless threads all about oil.

If you are going to have someone else do your oil changes I would highly suggest finding a dealership you trust to do them. You're not guaranteed to find better skilled people but you will have records of the oil changes in the event you have any warranty problems.

I stopped going to oil change places after they drove my friend's Jeep through their bay door. I had another friend who drove off with no oil in her engine. It's one of those highly critical things that I do myself because then I know it's done right.

yes i do understand that the rotary engine is quite thirsty when it comes to oil but does driving 900 miles and using 1 quarts of oil sound reasonable?

if changing oil was as easy as it seems i would do it too but i'm a total noob to this stuff.

Are you sure it's a 2011? Thats within normal use. By the way the dip stick is 2.1 qts of oil from low to full. We would like to see pics.....

I was always under the impression that oil was an "Every 3,000 miles" kind of thing. It can vary that much?

Sorry I should have said car not dip stick. The RX-8 has much more then 4 quarts in it total. How many miles were on it when you got it. How did you drive it during the break in period.

pretty normal S2's burn a hella more oil than S1
my R3 burns half a quart every 500 miles
so 900 miles a quart is normal
that dipstick halfway isnt really a quart, its just a bit more than half a quart

theres changing oil every 3000 miles, but you still have to add oil between oil changes. good thing rotaries dont need expensive oil so just put some Castrol GTX in and call it a day.

if you read the manual carefully, you should know whats going on

Do the oil changes yourself, buy the filter from the dealer and good oil separately.

Completely normal. Also between oil changes. You need to read up on how rotaries consume oil. Also, keep away from Jiffy Lube and similar places. I second Flashwing's recommendation to find a good Mazda dealer for routine maintenance, If there isn't one nearby, at least find a good independent garage for oil changes.

You should check the oil every other gas fill-up, and get a feel for how often you need to add oil to yours.

Many people do their first oil change at 1k miles, to ensure that break-in metallic particles are removed.

Change the oil yourself (record on MazdaUSA website) or have the dealer do it so you have warranty records. We were all noobs once upon a time. The DIY's here are very good and the only way you learn is to Do.

This is not necessarly true. Most accounts I read here indicate oil use for the S2 at about 1 quart for every 2000-3000 miles. This is the amount my 2009 is using as well. Oil usage appears to depend on driving habits, transmission type (auto or manual), and probably the individual tolerances inside your particular engine.

oh well, I drive normally, 3000-4000 rpm gear change and sometimes hitting 6000-8000 in 2nd
its been the same half a quart per 500-600 mile since I got it.

My Spec II needed nearly a quart during the first 1000 miles, no problem.

All city driving here though.

I wonder if it uses more or less or the same on a long trip?
